  • Thursday sports cancellations

The Vandalia High School girls basketball team and the Vandalia Junior High boys basketball teams will not play tonight. In addition, icy road conditions have given the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament another setback.

The girls game has been rescheduled for Friday night, with the JV game beginning at 5 p.m. in Pana. The Lady Vandals will host Altamont at 11 a.m. on Saturday as scheduled.

The junior high boys' games, also against Pana, have yet to be rescheduled.

  • Slow starts doom Lady Vandals in two losses

The Vandalia High School girls basketball team scored no more than 20 points in the first half of losses to Neoga and Hillsboro last week.

Against Hillsboro last Thursday, the Vandals fell behind 30-14 at halftime. They did score 25 points in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit in a 60-52 loss.

On Saturday, Vandalia traveled to Neoga and held a 20-18 halftime lead, but the Indians scored 36 second-half points en route to a 54-44 win.

  • SC girls to play on Saturday

The South Central High School girls basketball team will play Woodlawn in its home opener on Saturday at 2 p.m. after that game was canceled on Monday.

Last Thursday, the Brownstown High School girls basketball team lost to  Neoga, 61-38.
