Starting on Thursday, three area teams will be in action at the second Vandal Shootout of the summer.

  • Lucken set for All-Star Game

Two college-bound football players from the 2013 graduating class of Vandalia Community High School have been invited to play in one last high school game on Saturday.

Ryan Ambuehl and Jeff Lucken have been selected to play in the 25th annual West-Central Illinois All-Star football game at Sacred Heart-Griffin High School in Springfield.

The game – which features 91 players from 34 schools – will be this Saturday at 5 p.m., with the gates to open an hour before the game.

  • A class of their own

The group of senior athletes who graduated from Vandalia Community High School at the end of the May left behind a year’s worth of successes that they will never forget. Just over 40 percent of the senior class played at least one sport, 22 percent of the 99 graduates were two-sport athletes, and five seniors – Wade Cowger, Abby Dugan, Leyton Godoyo, Michael Wells and Morgan Whightsil – played sports year-round for the Vandals.

  • Jr. Legion squad gets first victory

VANDALIA – In the season’s first two doubleheaders, Vandalia’s Jr. Legion squad had been close to winning the opening game each night.

On Tuesday, Post 95 was clearly tired of coming up short.

Vandalia plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning against Carlyle and pitched out of several jams to take a 5-2 victory for its first win of the summer.

  • Rain cuts short Post 95's opener

VANDALIA – Summer baseball returned to Vandalia last Thursday, but the summer weather was lagging a few innings behind.

Vandalia’s Sr. Legion team had its season-opener cut short after a line of storms rolled into the area after the top of the seventh inning, giving Centralia a 6-1 victory in non-district action.

Post 95 (0-1) had just three hits – including two infield singles – and only hit two balls in the air against Centralia’s Kyle Davis, who showed exceptional control in striking out eight.

  • Alumni sweep Lady Vandals in softball

VANDALIA – The alumni put on an offensive show in sweeping a doubleheader on Tuesday against the current Lady Vandals.

Vandalia’s former players pounded out 31 runs in the two games – 13-5 and 18-3 victories.

Audra Donaldson had five hits on the night, including a pair of doubles, and Shelby Cearlock totaled four hits – with two doubles and a triple – and four runs.

In game one, the alums scored in all five innings, doing the most damage in the third and fourth innings with four runs in each.

  • Patoka, Vandalia in first shootout

A pair of local teams will take part in the first summer shootout in Vandalia.

Next Monday and Tuesday, Vandalia and Patoka will both be in action at the various schools in the Vandalia district, with each team starting play at 9 a.m. on Monday.

  • Officials don't allow Ambuehl to run in state finals

The Vandalia boys track season ended with a tough break at Saturday’s state finals.

Coming into the 110-meter hurdle finals as the No. 4 seed, senior Ryan Ambuehl did not make it to the check-in tent in time to run in the finals, even though he reported before the race actually began.
