  • Cougars looking ahead after VHT

    South Central is looking ahead to its conference schedule after struggling to 0-5 mark in the Vandalia Holiday Tournament.

    After battling five teams with better records than their own, the Cougars (2-11) will look to improve on their 1-1 Midland Trail Conference mark in the second half of the season.

    Last season, the Cougars were 2-10 following the VHT, but finished with an 11-7 record over the final 18 games of the year, and coach Rick Simmons is very hopeful that his team will repeat that trend.

  • Lady Vandals take fourth at Mattoon

    The Vandalia High School girls basketball team placed fourth at the Mattoon Tournament last Thursday.

    Junior Amber Bruno and senior Haley Wollerman were both named to the all-tournament team. Wollerman was also selected last season.

    The Lady Vandals had a 2-3 record at the tournament, and now stand at 7-9 on the season.

  • Flora wins Vandalia Holiday Tournament; Vandals take third

    The Flora Wolves are now eight-time champions of the Vandalia Holiday Tournament after dispatching Pana, 75-69, Thursday night to win their second title in three years.

    Tournament MVP Paul Knapp led the Wolves with 26 points during the game, and all-tournament selection Nick Painter added 17, despite having to sit on the bench with foul trouble for extended time periods.

    All-tournament selections Jared McMillen and Mitchell Beyers led Pana in scoring, with 23 and 20 points, respectively.

  • By beating Vandals, Pana to play Flora for the Vandalia Holiday Tournament championship

    It was expected that there would be plenty of upsets during this season's Vandalia Holiday Tournament, but there were just two during pool play as most teams finished pool play according to their seed.

    Third-seeded Pana earned one of those upsets, defeating No. 2 Vandalia, 63-52, Wednesday night to earn a spot in the championship game against top-seeded Flora, which beat No. 4 Wesclin, 63-49, in the final game of pool play.

    The Vandals will face No. 6 Greenville in the third-place game. The Comets upset Wesclin on the first day of the tournament.

  • Vandals 3-0 through first two days of own tourney

    The Vandals are 3-0 through the first two days of the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, and they had a showdown with Pana Wednesday night that decided who would represent Pool B in Thursday's championship game.

    The results of that game and the entire championship day schedule will be available at www.leaderunion.com by Thursday morning.

    In the first three games of the tournament, Vandalia rallied to beat Stew-Stras, 55-46, on Tuesday, while on Monday grinding out a win against St. Elmo, 48-43, and using a fast start to down Shelbyville, 57-37.

  • Vandalia grad has memorable senior season at Illinois College

    During his college career, Brock Doehring has been through a lot.

    But as he exits Illinois College, he leaves a team that is on the rise.

    This year, the IC Blueboys finished second in the Midwest Conference and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time in school history.
