  • Lady Vandals place seventh at SCC Championships

CARLINVILLE – Led by two second-place finishes from sophomore Sierah Ruffner, the Vandalia girls track team finished seventh at the South Central Conference Championships on Tuesday, with 28 points.

The meet also marked the final SCC Championships for Vandalia coach Mike Travelstead.

“I didn’t think about, but I guess it is,” he said. “It’s starting to sink in; 23 years is a long time. I’ve enjoyed it.”

  • Senior Spotlight: Christina Pennington

CARLINVILLE – Christina Pennington was never going to be tall.

“It was given that I’d be short,” she said. “It’s in the family genes. If I want to be taller, I wear my heels.”

The 4-foot-11 senior hasn’t let that deter her from pursuing an athletic career, however, and even though she is rarely among the top finishers, she is one of the most important athletes on Vandalia’s girls track team.

  • IHSA announce regional seeds, schedules

The Illinois High School Association announced last week the seeds and schedules for this season's baseball and softball regional tournaments.

Seeds and schedules for the tournaments involving area teams are listed below.

  • Greenville ends Lady Vandals' run at perfection

GREENVILLE – The timing of the Vandalia softball team’s 10-2 loss to Greenville on Monday was both good and bad.

It was good, because beating a team three times in a season is difficult, and that could have been the task facing the Lady Vandals in the regional tournament had they swept the regular-season series on Monday.

It was bad, because it was a conference game, and a loss always makes winning a conference title a bit more difficult.

  • After week of rainouts, Vandals defeat CORL

Sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s were a far cry from the conditions that had canceled six Vandalia baseball games in the nine days before the Vandals met Christ Our Rock Lutheran on Friday.

But on a field that still had some wet spots, the Vandals punched out five runs and survived a late surge by the Silver Stallions against their backup defense to beat Christ Our Rock, 5-3, after rain had soaked the area for almost a week.

  • NFHS creates new HS wrestling weights

Sweeping changes have been made the weight classes in high school wrestling after the National Federation of State High School Associations’ wrestling rules committee approved an upward shift that changes 10 of the 14 weight classes.

    The four weight classes that did not change are 145, 152, 160 and 285 pounds. The new weights are: 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220 and 285.

  • Vandals beat Pana in dual meet

The restriction that forces athletes to compete in four or fewer events was lifted on Tuesday for a dual meet between the Pana and Vandalia boys track teams, and the Vandals took full advantage to win the meet, 74-64.

Only seven Vandalia athletes were available for the meet, and each of them placed, including nine firsts and nine seconds.

The meet serves as a tune-up for the freshmen and sophomores, who will compete in the South Central Conference Frosh/Soph Championships on Saturday in Litchfield at 9 a.m.
