  • South Central wins MTC title

    The South Central High School baseball team held off Woodlawn to win the Midland Trail Conference championship on Friday.

    Shawn Meyer moved his season record to 5-0, while pitching the Cougars to the 10-9 victory. He struck out eight batters in 6 2/3 innings, and Luke Krajefska recorded the final out to earn the save.

    Offensivey, Cole Armstrong was 3-for-5, with a pair of doubles and two RBI.

    Bret Pitts also had two doubles, and Colby Bushue was 3-for-5, with an RBI.

  • South Central reaches 22nd straight MTC title game

    For the 22nd straight year, the South Central High School baseball team will be playing for the Midland Trail Conference championship, in what is the team's final year in the conference.

    After defeating second-seeded North Clay, 11-5, on Wednesday night, the No. 3 Cougars will battle top-seeded Woodlawn for the conference crown on Friday at 7 p.m. in Kinmundy.

    South Central, which will join the National Trail Conference next season, fell behind early on Wednesday, but a four-run fifth inning, and a six-run seventh inning propelled the team to a win.

    Drawing the daunting task of being Vandalia’s No. 1 singles player, senior Lauren Wasmuth was starting to get down on herself after recording zero wins through the first half of the season.

    Top-seeded St. Elmo got 17 strikeouts from junior Connor Beasley and held Patoka to just one hit during the championship game of the Egyptian-Illini Conference Tournament last Friday at Vandalia High School.

  • Swofford, Vandals win SCC golf meet; Leiken places 2nd as individual

    Vandalia junior Blake Swofford shot a 2-under-par 70 to place first and help lead the Vandals to the team title at the South Central Conference boys golf tournament on Monday.

    The Vandals combined for a 318 at The Rail Golf Course in Springfield to beat Hillsboro by five strokes.

  • Vandals go on road and thrash Panthers

    The Vandals set season-high marks in several statistical categories and scored in each quarter during a 41-0 rout of Litchfield last Friday night.

  • Netters lose; will host Volley for a Cure

    A match that was even throughout most of the night tilted Pana's way over the final 15 points last Thursday during a 21-25, 19-25 loss for the Lady Vandals.

  • Vandalia tennis team downs Hillsboro again

    With No. 2 singles player Chelsey Stewart unavailable due to illness, Schroeder was forced to pencil in a lineup he hadn’t used all season long, which made him a little nervous about whether his team would beat the Lady Toppers.

  • Lady Cougars win Herrin Tournament

    The South Central High School volleyball team won the Herrin Tournament on Saturday.

    Seniors Emily Atwood and Kinzie Neilson were named to the all-tournament team.

    The Vandalia eighth-grade girls basketball team won the Old Capitol Classic last Friday by beating Brownstown, 30-20.

    The team also won the seventh-grade tournament last season.
