  • Ramsey beats Mulberry Grove in third-place game

RAMSEY – Each Rams batter reached base at least once, and junior Tyler Pryor and sophomore Tylor Knisley allowed just two hits last Friday, as the Ramsey High School baseball team defeated Mulberry Grove, 7-0, for third place at the Ramsey Tournament.

Pryor did not overpower the Aces – recording just three strikeouts in four innings – but he let his defense make plays behind him, inducing three pop-ups and six grounders.

Knisley struck out three in two innings of work to close out Ramsey's first win of the season.

  • Vandals beat EAWR in opener

WOOD RIVER — Four players scored touchdowns to help the Vandalia High School football team win its season-opener at East Alton-Wood River on Friday, 27-6.

Seniors Levi Ulmer and Bryan Hosick, and juniors Tim Ritchey and Ryan Ambuehl each scored for the Vandals during the game, which was the fifth straight win against the Oilers.

EAWR scored toward the end of the second quarter, but did not threaten during the third or fourth.

A full recap of the game will appear in the Sept. 1 edition of The Leader-Union.

  • Football scheduling changes

The Vandalia JV football game scheduled for Monday has been relocated, and the freshman football game scheduled for Thursday has been canceled.

The Vandals JV squad on Monday was scheduled to play Greenville at home, but due to the ongoing construction of the all-weather track, the game has been moved to Greenville.

On Thursday, the freshmen were scheduled to play at home against Carlinville, but the game has been canceled.

  • FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Week 1 at EAWR

The Vandalia High School football team on Friday night opens its season at East Alton-Wood River.

Vandalia, which finished last season 4-5 and defeated the Oiliers, 24-21, with a last-second field goal in week one, return several starters this season, including senior running back Levi Ulmer and senior linebacker Blake Mills.

They, combined with the rest of the veterans, are expected to build a strong core that will allow the Vandals to better their 2010 record and move back into the top half of the South Central Conference.

  • Senior Spotlight: Abby Hickerson

Playing alongside Callie George in her doubles match against Roxana on Monday, Vandalia senior Abby Hickerson scored two authoritative points.

Leading 5-0, Hickerson was playing close to the net, and when a Roxana player hit a short floater, Hickerson slammed the ball at a sharp angle to bounce it out of play.

Later when leading 6-1, Hickerson again had a floater up front, but she blasted it at a lesser angle and it zoomed toward the baseline, skipping ever so slightly just before sneaking out of bounds.

  • Vandalia tennis team gets strong doubles play but falls to Roxana

The Lady Vandals definitely had a chance to defeat Roxana for the second straight season, but two of the three close singles matches went to the Lady Shells, who continued on to win the match, 6-3.

In both team’s season-opener, Vandalia’s Abby Hickerson, a senior and the No. 3 player, earned Vandalia’s only singles win, downing Jane Pratt, 6-0, 6-4.

The Lady Vandals’ No. 2 Callie George, a senior, won the first set of her match against Josie Mosinalli, 6-4, but Mosinalli rallied back to beat George, 1-6, 4-6, in the final two sets.

  • Brownstown tops Mulberry Grove at Ramsey Tournament

RAMSEY – Brownstown senior Brady McDowell capped off an eventful game with a two-run homer that gave the Bombers their final margin of 7-2 against Mulberry Grove at the Ramsey Tournament on Tuesday.

McDowell earlier in the game had a plume of dust float into his eyes and was later accused of intentionally throwing dirt toward a Mulberry Grove player.

"There was some intensity there, and the guy got his cleat stuck in Brady's arm sleeve," said Brownstown coach Ken Milano. "He says as he was trying to get up, the dirt just flew.

  • Patoka defeats hosts at Ramsey Tourney

RAMSEY - Quinn Wadkins pitched a complete game, had three hits and scored four times to power Patoka past Ramsey on the second day of the Ramsey Tournament.

Wadkins also had four steals during the 9-1 victory.

He led off Tuesday's game with a bloop single and promptly stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch.

With a 3-0 lead by the end of the top of the first, after Jake Orrell and Mark Rogers scored, Wadkins struck out two batters in the bottom half.
