  • Lady Vandals shaky in victory vs. Neoga

The Lady Vandals had a 20-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter against Neoga on Saturday, but by the end of the period, the margin was down to single digits.

Vandalia did come away with a 49-37 win, but coach Michelle McNary was not satisfied that her team couldn’t maintain its big lead over a Class 1A school.

“It seems like we had no fire or intensity,” she said. “We had a 20-point lead and started going through the motions instead of being fired up.”

  • Vandal wrestlers go 2-1 at Saturday quad meet

Two days after giving coach Jason Clay his 100th career dual team win, the Vandalia wrestlers posted a 2-1 mark at a home quadrangular on Saturday, defeating Herrin and Oakwood, and falling to Leroy.

Clay’s milestone victory came last Thursday during a 73-6 thrashing of Hillsboro, which included pins by nine of the 12 Vandals who wrestled.

“It’s one of those things where we’ve had a lot of good kids,” Clay said. “They’ve put in a lot of time and work to improve as a program.”

  • Bombers hold late lead to win

ST. ELMO – Brownstown held on despite South Central nearly erasing an eight-point deficit in the final minute of a 37-35 win on Tuesday at the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament.

The Cougars (1-6) made eight free throws in the final 1:08 of the game, but were unable to get a shot off after earning possession with about four seconds left.

  • Eagles switch defense to cruise to win

ST. ELMO – The Eagles switched to a zone defense in the second half to shut out Ramsey in the third quarter during a 68-37 win on Tuesday at the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament.

Struggling to build a lead with its man-to-man coverage, St. Elmo coach Greg Feezel employed a zone look in the third quarter, which helped his team outscore the Rams, 16-0, to take a 53-27 lead.

"We decided to sit in a zone and see if we could do better," Feezel said. "We played it pretty well, but we couldn't guard them man-to-man.

  • The College Report: Hobbie leading Greenville College

Greenville College has struggled through the first 10 games.

But Vandalia graduate Laura Hobbie is doing everything she can to change that.

The Greenville Lady Panthers are 3-7 through their first 10 games, and in the last five games, they have just one victory. Hobbie, however, has been in double figures in every game, save one.
