  • Lady Vandals advance to regional title game

FLORA – Vandalia volleyball coach Allison Smith probably didn’t even know what a regional championship was the last time the Lady Vandals won one.

It’s been 26 seasons, but the hope is that the drought will end on Thursday.

“I think this team is really eager to get a championship,” Smith said. “They keep saying, ‘1985.’ I say, ‘Yes, in 1985, I was 5 years old, so let’s get this done.’”

  • Vandalia hosting Pana in playoffs

The Vandalia High School football team learned on Saturday night that it will be hosting conference foe Pana in the first round of the playoffs this Friday night at 7 p.m.

“It’s something we probably didn’t expect,” said coach John Stout of playing at home. “It’s always good to start the first round at home, and I think it’s a big advantage for us.”

Just two weeks ago, Pana (6-3) came to play in Vandalia, with the Vandals (6-3) holding on for a nail-biting 20-14 win.

In Altamont, No. 2 St. Elmo defeated third-seeded Ramsey in the semifinals, 22-25, 28-26, 25-16.

Junior Kellie Crain added four service aces.

  • Senior Spotlight: Blake Mills

It's hurt for a while now.

Injured during a game against Marquette Catholic almost a month and a half ago, Blake Mills' ankle has yet to fully heal, but that hasn't stopped the Vandalia senior from taking the field every game this season.

Playing exclusively on the defensive side of the ball since his injury, save for a couple of snaps at center last Friday, Mills has established himself as the Vandals' top tackler, with 54 solos and six for a loss on the season.
