    There will not be any pre-sale tickets for Wednesday night's Red Hill sectional game featuring St. Elmo and Woodlawn. All $5 tickets will have to be purchased at the door.

  • Vandal wrestlers struggle against Lena-Winslow at state tournament

    BLOOMINGTON - The Vandal wrestlers had trouble against Lena-Winslow in the team state quarterfinals on Saturday morning, falling 58-9 and only securing two match wins.

    Those back-to-back wins came from junior Zach Jackson, who pinned Dakota Cain in 1:36, and senior Dayin Godberson, who won a 9-5 decision against Dylan Gahm.

    After that, however, that Vandals still trailed, 16-9, and then were not able to secure any more wins, with five of the next seven wrestlers losing by fall.

  • St. Elmo wins second straight regional championship

    St. Elmo trailed at halftime, but used a third-quarter run to get ahead of Altamont, and the Eagles would eventually prevail, 43-34, during Friday's night regional championship game in Altamont.

    Junior Connor Beasley had a double-double to lead St. Elmo to its second straight regional title. With the win, the Eagles will play Woodlawn at Red Hill High School on Wednesday night.

    This will be the second straight season those teams have met in the sectional tournament.

  • Vandals fall in regional title game

    PANA - The Vandalia boys basketball team put up a valient effort, but it did not have enough offensive weapons to keep up with Pana during a 57-43 loss on Friday night.

    Senior Dathan Berning was Vandalia's leading scorer, with 11 points, and junior Leyton Godoyo had a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

    But Pana secured a lead at the start of the game, and the Vandals would never regain it in their fourth loss to the Panthers this season.

  • St. Elmo to play for second straight regional title

    ALTAMONT — St. Elmo played nearly flawless basketball in the first half to build an insurmountable lead during a 68-40 victory against North Clay in Wednesday night's regional semifinals.

    The Eagles scored first, but after a short tie at 2-2, St. Elmo pulled away to a 20-2 lead. The team led 37-11 at halftime.

    Senior Blake Pruett was the leading scorer with 20 points, and junior Connor Beasley (13) and senior Patrick Schaal (11) also reached double-digits.

  • Furious rally gives Vandals upset OT win in regional semifinals

    PANA — Facing a 17-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter made it seem that the Vandalia boys basketball season was all but over.

    A 16-0 run, which lasted just 2:09 and was sparked by a seven-point possession 1:30 into the final period, changed the dynamics dramatically, and helped the Vandals tie the game at 49 and eventually win 55-52 in overtime.

  • Vandal wrestlers hope to make state semifinals for first time since '07

    Vandalia seniors opened and closed Tuesday’s team sectional match against Herrin, but without the efforts of some underclassmen throughout, the Vandals probably would not be going back to state.

    Senior Anthony Fladeland scored a pin in the first bout, and senior Levi Ulmer’s 10-7 decision put the Vandals ahead by enough to secure a 39-33 victory against Herrin, giving the Vandals their seventh trip to state in eight years.

    But, the team hasn’t won a first-round match since 2007, when it placed second in the state.

  • Ulmer places fifth at individual state tournament

    CHAMPAIGN – After a one-year hiatus, the Vandals had a wrestler back on the medal stand at the individual state tournament.

    And while it wasn’t the medal that senior Levi Ulmer was hoping to win on Saturday, he ultimately was pleased to place fifth in the 195-pound weight class after an 11-4 victory.

  • Seniors use late play to win regional game

    PANA – It was a play that seniors should make.

    And Bryan Hosick and Dathan Berning made it seem easy.

    Hosick stole an inbounds pass with just more than a minute to play and quickly passed to Berning, whose 3-pointer gave the Vandals their first lead since the halfway point of the second quarter and propelled the team to a 49-45 win against Hillsboro in first-round regional action.
