  • The Next Level: College athlete roundup (Feb. 23)

    Many athletes that spent their high school years in Fayette County have moved on to play for college or professional teams. Below are athletes who played in the past two weeks.

  • County teams have mixed results at regionals

    Two area teams are still alive in boys basketball regional action at Altamont.
     

    South Central vs. Brownstown
    In first-round action on Tuesday, a late surge from South Central moved it by Brownstown for a 35-28 win.

    Neither team scored more than eight points in any of the first three quarters, and third-seeded South Central led by only two entering the fourth period.

  • Ulmer places fifth at state

    CHAMPAIGN – Senior Levi Ulmer led a group of five wrestlers at the individual state wrestling tournament, placing fifth.

    Ulmer, who narrowly lost in the championship semifinals, ended up dropping to the fifth-place match, which on Saturday he won, 11-4, against Garrett Kestner of Camp Point.

    In that match, Ulmer secured his first points since the championship quarterfinals with a quick takedown of Kestner and continued on without much trouble to become the first Vandal to place since 2010, when Trevor Pyle took third.

  • Saturday updates from the IHSA Individual State Tournament

    CHAMPAIGN - It's the final day of the Illinois High School Association Individual State Wrestling Tournament, and at the time of this post, just one Vandal is still alive.

    In the 9 a.m. session, senior Daniel Edwards (152) lost a very tough match to Gage Hedges, 1-0, in the wrestle-back quarterfinals. Had Edwards won the match, he would have placed.

    Senior Levi Ulmer (195) will be wrestling in the wrestle-back semifinals. In that match, he will face Kenny Lindsey of St. Joe-Ogden, a rematch of the Robinson sectional final.

  • Ulmer and Edwards still alive in wrestle-backs at state

    Seniors Levi Ulmer and Daniel Edwards will both wrestle on the third day of the Illinois High School Association Individual State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.

    Ulmer, who lost to Logan Staver, 3-0, in the championship semifinals, got an automatic spot in the wrestle-back semifinals, meaning he will place.

  • Bruno makes state in 3-point shootout

    Vandalia junior Amber Bruno qualified for the state round of the 3-point shootout last Thursday by making eight shots at the Fairfield Sectional finals.

    Her appearance at state will give the Lady Vandals two in two years, as Haley Wollerman qualified last season.

    The state shootout preliminaries are on Thursday at Redbird Arena in Bloomington.

  • Friday updates of the IHSA Individual State Wrestling Tournament

    Throughout the day, this page will provide updates on the Illinois High School Association Individual State Wrestling Tournament as they become available.

    On Friday, two Vandalia wrestlers are guaranteed to wrestle, with three others waiting to see if they will become eligible for the wrestle-back bracket.

    9:22 p.m.: Senior Levi Ulmer earlier tonight lost in the semifinals, 3-0. He will wrestle during the wrestle-back semifinals on Saturday. That round begins at 11 a.m.

  • Two senior wrestlers advance at individual state tournament

    CHAMPAIGN – Seniors Daniel Edwards and Levi Ulmer won first-round bouts at the individual state tournament on Thursday.

    With their wins, they are assured at least a spot in the wrestle-back bracket if they are unable to win in Friday’s quarterfinal matches. That round starts at 8:30 a.m. at Assembly Hall.

    Ulmer (32-6) defeated Jeffrey Haley (32-11) of Quincy Notre Dame, 14-8, by taking immediate control and fighting all the way to the finish.

    And as an encore, he threw up a Subway pizza sandwich all over the mat.

  • Thursday updates from the IHSA Individual State Wrestling Tournament

    This page will be updated throughout the afternoon with Vandalia's results from the Illinois High School Association Individual State Wrestling Tournament, which is being held at Assembly Hall in Champaign.
