HILLSBORO – With a win against Auburn in Monday’s sectional game, Vandalia’s eighth-grade volleyball team earned the school’s first-ever state tournament berth.

The Jr. Lady Vandals came from behind in each set of a 26-24, 18-25, 25-23 victory against Auburn at the Class 8-3A Hillsboro Sectional, and will meet Beecher on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. in the first round of the Illinois Elementary School Association state tournament.

  • HARNER: Vandalia eighth-grader's improbable run continues with sectional win

HILLSBORO – Vandalia’s eighth-grade volleyball team was pretty much an afterthought going into the postseason.

Toiling around .500 throughout the season, the Jr. Lady Vandals entered last week’s regional tournament in Hillsboro as the No. 4 seed.

What followed was the beauty of sports.

One by one, teams fell victim to Vandalia’s patient style. First fifth-seeded Litchfield, then top-seeded Staunton and finally third-seeded Gillespie.

But a regional wasn’t enough for this feisty group of eighth-graders.

  • Vandalia's eighth-graders rally for regional volleyball title

HILLSBORO – The first time Shelbi Stewart came to the service line, she only got to serve once.

The second time she came around, she rallied her team from a seven-point deficit to get them within one point of the lead.

Vandalia’s eighth-graders would eventually get the lead and take the first set in last Thursday’s regional championship game against Gillespie, and that momentum continued through the second set of a 26-24, 25-18 victory.

Enlow, wrestling for Vandalia Kings, pinned his first opponent in the championship bracket before falling 2-1 to Donovan Ford, the eventual fourth-place finisher.

  • Lady Vandals insider: More tournaments added this year

VANDALIA – The Lady Vandals have added two tournaments to their schedule, and that heightened competition could help the team in May’s postseason games.

As has been standard, Vandalia will compete at the Noble Round-Robin on the first weekend of the season, and the Tri-City Tournament on the final weekend of the season.

But during the season, Vandalia has developed its own tournament on Saturday, April 4, and the team has also added the Nokomis Tournament on Saturday, April 19.

  • BSE falls in opener

BROWNSTOWN – Offense was hard to find for both teams early in Tuesday's season-opener, but once Shelbyville got started, it was hard to stop the Rams.

Shelbyville scored nine times in the fifth inning to break open a game that Brownstown/St. Elmo had been leading 5-3, and the Rams added three more runs in the seventh for a 15-6 victory.
