    Jr. Vandals have tough go-around at IKWF state championships

    All three Jr. Vandals participating in Saturday's Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation state tournament were unable to advance past the first round.

    Luke Francis lost a 3-0 decision to Benjamin Cottone of Sycamore in the Novice 177 division, and Jarek Wehrle lost, 2-0, to Enzo Silva of Martinez Fox Valley Elite in the Novice 62 division.

    In the Novice 89 division, Tanner Swain was pinned by Ja'Chun Smith of Little Huskies in 1:08.

  • St. Elmo, Mulberry Grove and South Central openers canceled

    Due to the rainy weather over the weekend, many area fields have non-playable conditions.

    Both the St. Elmo and Mulberry Grove baseball and softball games, as well as South Central's softball game, scheduled for Tuesday have been canceled.

    But when applied to the athletic career of Vandalia senior Amber Bruno, the old adage just doesn’t hold up.

    Whether it’s shooting in basketball or hitting in softball, Bruno is a triple threat, and those skills have allowed her to become one of the most decorated female athletes in school history.

  • Eighth-graders to play for regional title

    TEUTOPOLIS – Sometimes, Sarah Bigelow lets the moment engulf her when she’s standing at the service line.

    But in what was thus far Vandalia’s biggest game of the season, she looked calm, cool and collected.

    Taking over the serve with a 16-12 lead in the second set of Saturday’s regional semifinal against St. Elmo,

    Bigelow served six aces in nine points to close out the match and give the Vandalia eighth-graders a spot in the regional title game.

  • Three seniors earn all-conference honors

    Three Vandalia seniors have been selected to all-conference teams in basketball by coaches in the South Central Conference.

    Amber Bruno was named second team for the girls, and Michael Wells took second-team honors and Aaron Harter took third-team honors for the boys.

    Bruno had the best season of her career in 2012-13, leading the team in scoring in all but five games as she averaged 19.4 points per game.

  • Sophomore Stewart qualifies for state in AAU freshmen/sophomore tournament

    Vandalia sophomore Jake Stewart has advanced to the state level in an AAU freshmen/sophomore wrestling tournament.

    The 152-pounder placed third at the Granite City Sectional on Saturday to earn his spot in this weekend’s state event, which is being held in Springfield on Saturday and Sunday.

    Sophomores Ryne Lipsey and Adam Palmer, and freshman Luke Tessman also participated in the event, which was not divided into classes like the Illinois High School Association state series.

  • Three IKWF wrestlers advance to state event

    Three Vandalia Jr. Club wrestlers have advanced to the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation state tournament.

    Jarek Wehrle, Tanner Swain and Luke Francis each placed third at Saturday’s Highland Sectional to earn their spot at this weekend’s state championships.

    The event will be held at BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford on Friday and Saturday.

    All three will be wrestling in the novice division, with Wehrle going at 62 pounds, Swain at 89 pounds and Francis at 177 pounds.

  • Vandalia to return a lot of wrestling talent

    BLOOMINGTON – When most teams finish a rebuilding season, athletes and coaches look to see how much improvement was made in what was usually a subpar season.

    This season’s Vandalia wrestling squad wasn’t like most teams.

    Wrestling without four individuals who made the 2012 individual state tournament, the Vandals turned to several young, inexperienced athletes to fill the holes in their lineup.

    “Coming in, I was hoping to be respectable,” said coach Jason Clay, “but we did more than that.”

  • Vandals set to begin rebuilding team

    HILLSBORO – With another boys basketball season coming  to an end on Feb. 22, the Vandals now find themselves at a crossroads.

    Gone are six seniors who played the majority of this year's minutes, and it will up to a group of mostly inexperienced players to come together as a team to give Vandalia a winning season in 2013-14.
