  • The Next Level: Graduate athlete roundup (Jan. 30)

    Many athletes who spent their high school years in Fayette County have moved on to play for college or professional teams. Below are the athletes who recently made headlines.

    Sierah Ruffner • Freshman • Greenville • Track

    •Jan. 25 – Ruffner, a Vandalia graduate, placed first in the high jump at the Illinois College Snow Bird Open. She cleared 4 feet, 11 inches for the win. GC placed seventh of 12 teams.

  • Area Prep Roundup (Jan. 30)

    VANDALIA

    The seventh-grade basketball season ended for Vandalia on Tuesday, with a 52-26 loss to Hillsboro in the regional semifinals.

    Blake Barth had seven points to lead the Jr. Vandals, who finished with a 10-9 record.

    Vandalia's seventh-graders advanced to the regional semifinals, with a 41-28 win against Litchfield on Monday at the Hillsboro Regional.

    Trevor Smalls led the Jr. Vandals (10-8) with 12 points.

  • Sports Roundup – Jan. 28, 2014

    The Vandalia seventh-grade boys basketball team advanced to the regional semifinals in Hillsboro after beating Litchfield, 41-28, on Monday. The Jr. Vandals take the court on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Hillsboro.

    The Lady Vandals fell to Litchfield, 56-42, on Monday night.

    At the NTC Tournament in Altamont, Windsor beat Cowden-Herrck, 61-38, and Stew-Stras beat South Central, 47-36. On Tuesday night, St. Anthony faces Windsor at 6:15 p.m., and St. Elmo/Brownstown faces Neoga at about 7:45 p.m.

  • Weekend sports roundup – Jan. 27

    Vandalia's wrestling team went 4-0 at Beardstown on Saturday, with the signature win coming against No. 3 PORTA.

    Vandalia opened with a 57-23 win against West Hancock, and followed with a 66-11 win against Beardstown and a 61-12 win against Pittsfield.

    The Vandals then earned seven pins to dispatch No. 3 PORTA, 48-24.

    Patoka beat the Vandalia boys basketball team, 62-49. Vandalia's Collin Nestleroad (18) and Patoka's Johnnie Clift (16) were the leading scorers.

  • Sports Roundup – Jan. 24, 2014

    Vandalia's wrestlers earned the South Central Conference championship on Thursday by beating Roxana, 61-9, during a triangular at Mascoutah.

    The Vandals also beat Mascoutah, 72-7.

    Vandalia's junior high basketball teams swept Litchfield on Thursday, with the seventh-graders winning, 40-30, and the eighth-graders winning, 50-27.

    The Vandalia eighth-grade volleyball team won at Mulberry Grove, 25-10, 25-21.

    South Central's girls basketball team fell to Altamont, 40-15.

  • Jr. Vandals in tournament action this week

    Both of Vandalia's junior high boys basketball will begin play in separate tournaments this week.

    The seventh-graders will begin play in the Hillsboro Regional on Monday at 6 p.m. at Hillsboro Junior High.

    The fourth-seeded Jr. Vandals will play No. 5 Litchfield. Vandalia beat Litchfield, 40-30, on Thursday.

    With a win, Vandalia would advance to play top-seeded Hillsboro on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

  • Three area teams in CORL Tournament

    Three area teams will be among the field of five at next week’s Christ Our Rock Lutheran Tournament.

    Patoka, Mulberry Grove and Ramsey will be joined by CORL and Odin in the round-robin event.

    Monday, Jan. 27
    •6:15 p.m.: Odin vs. Ramsey
    •7:45 p.m.: Patoka vs. Mulberry Grove

    Tuesday, Jan. 28
    •6:15 p.m.: Mulberry Grove vs. Odin
