  • Vandals open season on Tuesday vs. South Central

    The Vandalia High School boys basketball team will open its season against South Central next Tuesday.

    In last season’s matchup, Vandalia defeated the Cougars, 48-42, with Dathan Berning leading the Vandals in scoring, with 17 points. For South Central, Colby Bushue was the leading scorer, with 12 points.

    For the Vandals, who finished 17-11 last season, the game will serve as a warm-up for the DuQuoin Tip Off Classic, which begins on Nov. 28.

  • Lady Vandals in Farina for season opener

    The Vandalia High School girls basketball team will open its season next Tuesday at South Central, with a varsity-only contest beginning at 6:15 p.m.

    For the Lady Vandals, the game will serve as the first test in a season during which the goal is to win at least 20 games.

    In last season’s game, Vandalia won, 67-33, with Amber Bruno scoring 12 points and Haley Wollerman and Hannah Edwards each scoring 11. Then-senior Amy Walton also added 11 for the Lady Vandals.

  • Mulberry Grove and Ramsey team up for tournament

    The Mulberry Grove and Ramsey High School Thanksgiving boys basketball tournaments have been consolidated into one event this season.

    Both schools will host a pool of four teams this week, with all eight teams coming together to play on Saturday, Nov. 26, at Mulberry Grove. Next season, the finals will be played at Ramsey.

    The new event is called the Mulberry Grove/Ramsey Super Turkey Tournament.

  • Earnest pictured in Sports Illustrated

    Vandalia Community High School graduate and current Vanderbilt University bowler Jessica Earnest was pictured in a collage of athletes in the Nov. 7 issue of Sports Illustrated. Earnest's picture appears on page 52 of the issue, and is part of the article, "Pay for Play," which examines how college athletes could be compensated financially while in school. The St. Louis Cardinals are on the cover of the issue.

  • Seventh-Grade Boys Get Victory

    The VJHS boys got a win against Ramsey last week.

  • VJHS Cheerleaders Earn Cheer Championship

    The Vandalia Junior High boys basketball cheerleading squad was recently awarded the cheerleading championship at the Brownstown Tournament.

  • Top 8 is still great

    BRIDGEPORT – Though the South Central volleyball team wasn't able to advance to the state tournament for the first time in school history, it doesn't erase the historic accomplishments the team did achieve.

    After winning their first-ever sectional championship, the Lady Cougars faced a stiff challenge from Gibault Catholic at the Bridgeport Super-Sectional on Saturday, falling to the Lady Hawks, 25-11, 25-15.

  • Four Lady Vandals named all-conference in volleyball

    Four players from the Vandalia volleyball team were named to the South Central Conference's all-conference team this season.

    Most notably, senior Haley Wollerman was a unanimous first-team selection, which coach Allison Smith said is very rare, after leading the team in service aces and assists.

    The team's leader in kills, junior RaeChelle Leiken, was also named to the first team.

    Junior Austyn Krueger was named to the second team, and junior Sierah Ruffner picked up an honorable mention selection.

  • Vandalia's Red/White Night scheduled for this Saturday

    The annual Red/White Night will be held at Vandalia Community High School this Saturday, starting at 5 p.m.

    The event, which is the unofficial start to Vandalia's basketball season, features four games and several other activities.

    There is no admission fee.

    All times for the scheduled events are approximate.

    •5-5:15 p.m. – Freshmen boys game
    •5:15-5:30 p.m. – Jr. Pro scrimmage (grades K-3)
    •5:30-6 p.m. – Jr. Pro scrimmage (grades 3-6)
    •6-6:20 p.m. – Varsity girls game
    •6:20-7:20 p.m. – Men's alumni game
    •7:20-7:30 p.m. – Cheerleading performance
