  • Mulberry Grove struggles at own Turkey Tourney

    MULBERRY GROVE – The Mulberry Grove High School boys basketball team did not win a game in its own Turkey Tourney last week.

    Senior center Allen Tompkins was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 15.25 points per game.

    In the final game of the tournament on Saturday, Mulberry Grove (0-4) was defeated by tournament champion Odin, 56-40.

    Odin (4-0) took a commanding lead at halftime by allowing the Aces just two second-quarter points, a bucket by Harley Steed. The game was knotted at 11 after the first period.

  • Future is bright for seventh-grade girls

    GREENVILLE – Coach Dana Kirk said there was “no shame” in losing the regional championship game, 37-19, to a Central A&M team which now has a 23-0 record.

    “This loss doesn’t define our season,” the Vandalia seventh-grade girls basketball coach said. “We are still 18-4.

    “Most kids at the seventh-grade level don’t dream of having a season like that.”

    As they get older, members of this team will be able to realistically dream for a lot more.

  • Vandalia girls win third straight

    The five-win girls basketball team of last season is no more for Vandalia High School.

    By notching its third straight win Monday against Marquette Catholic, the Vandals – who start just one senior – erased any doubt that the growing pains from last season would continue into this season by defeating the Explorers, 59-47.

  • Vandalia wrestlers battle in loss to BW

    Junior Daniel Edwards had Vandalia’s lone victory in the varsity wrestling team’s first match of the season on Tuesday night, a 57-6 loss to Belleville West.

    Edwards – wrestling at 152 pounds – pinned his opponent 3:16 into the match to prevent the Maroons from shutting out the Vandals.

    “He had one of their weaker kids, but he did what he is supposed to do,” said coach Jason Clay. “He had a couple of nice takedowns.”

  • Vandals learn from mistakes at Turkey Tourney

    Though the Vandalia High School boys basketball team only won one game in the annual St. Anthony Turkey Tournament, the team had a shot at third place, thanks to a stingy defensive effort in its first three contests.

    Three teams in the Vandals’ bracket ended the day Friday with a record of 1-2, but the Vandals earned the right to play in the third-place game on Saturday, based on allowing the fewest total points by their opponents.

  • Vandal seventh-graders fall short in regional title game

    The Vandalia Junior High seventh-grade girls basketball team lost to Central A&M in the regional championship game on Tuesday, 37-19.

    Central A&M is now 23-0 on the season, while Vandalia finished with an impressive 18-4 record.

  • Patoka JH boys take consolation title

    The Patoka Junior High boys basketball team won the consolation championship at the St. Theresa Tournament after defeating Kell, 36-27.

    The Warriors went 2-1 in the tournament, beating the hosts and losing to Central City.
    Patoka is 7-5 on the season.

  • Brownstown boys drop opener

    The Brownstown High School boys basketball team dropped its season opener to Sandoval, 65-59, on the opening day of the Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament.

    Brownstown had a tough go of it, trailing after the first quarter, 24-18, and losing 34-29 at halftime.

    Sandoval continued pulling away to put the Bombers away.

    Senior Zach Rigdon scored a game-high 28 points for Brownstown, making 10 field goals and eight free throws.

  • SC girls fall to 0-2

    The South Central High School girls basketball team was defeated by North Clay, 46-40, last Thursday.

    The Cougars (0-2) only scored three points in the first quarter and faced a 22-8 deficit at halftime.

    “We did not look good in the first half,” said coach Gary Kapper. “We had some good shots that were not falling, and we weren’t really patient on offense.

    “In the second half, we settled down and ran the offense a little better, which helped us to be more aggressive on the defensive end.”

  • Brownstown HS girls start season 2-0

    The Brownstown High School girls basketball is off to a 2-0 start after winning its season-opener against Mt. Olive, 65-35, last Tuesday and its second game against Shelbyville, 51-37, last Thursday.

    The Bombers held Mt. Olive scoreless in the first quarter, while posting 18 points of their own. Brownstown held a 38-9 lead at halftime.

    Senior Abby Hill led the Bombers offense, scoring 22 points, while seniors Brooke Maxey and Morgan Myers each pulled down six rebounds.
