RAMSEY – The Ramsey Junior High seventh-grade boys basketball team came within one shot of winning its own seventh-grade tournament.

The Rams fought back from a 22-16 deficit to pull within one point of Sorento during the championship game on Saturday, but after Sorento took a 24-21 lead, Brady Black had a bad bounce on a 3-point attempt at the buzzer that would have tied the game and forced overtime.

RAMSEY – The Patoka High School boys basketball team erased deficits of seven points three times but was unable to hold the lead it took on the first shot of the fourth quarter during a 50-42 loss to Christ Our Rock Lutheran in the Ramsey Thanksgiving Tournament.

Senior Cody Allen forced a tie with a few seconds left in the third quarter after converting a 3-point play when he was fouled on a layup.

Allen then grabbed a defensive rebound to open the fourth quarter and converted another 3-point play at the other end of the court.

EFFINGHAM – After falling behind 10-0 to Charleston in the opening minutes of the first game of St. Anthony's Thanksgiving Tournament on Monday, the Vandalia High School boys basketball team  used a barrage of 3-pointers by seniors Daniel Bell and Marty Johnson to take a halftime lead and, eventually, the game, 52-48.

Bell was 5 of 8 from 3-point range, including three in the first quarter, and Johnson added two 3-pointers in the first half. Bell scored a team-high 20 points, while Johnson added 11.

The Nokomis High School Board determined after “heated and emotional debate” and by a 4-3 vote at a special meeting Monday night that its sports teams will not join the South Central Conference.

Nokomis was scheduled to join the SCC in all sports, starting during the 2012-13 school year, but after the other SCC schools denied Nokomis’ request to join the conference in all sports except football, it began considering other options.
