  • Bombers drop two NTC games

    BROWNSTOWN – Sometimes it’s better to ignore the final score.

    In one of those, “What are you going to do?” situations, the Brownstown High School boys basketball team was handled by state-power Teutopolis, 80-25, on Tuesday night.

    His team outsized by even the Wooden Shoes’ reserve players, Brownstown coach Vince Rohr said there wasn’t any shame in losing.

    “T-Town is a great team,” he said. “If they don’t win state, I’ll be very surprised.”

  • The College Report: Doehring to return for another season

    Most athletes would not have to ponder long if asked if they would return to their beloved sport for even one more game.

    Vandalia grad Brock Doehring, an Illinois College football player, would be among those who did not have to ponder long. The answer was a resounding yes.

    Doehring has enough credits to graduate, but because he has an unused redshirt year, which he received in 2008 after missing the season with an elbow injury, he decided to take advantage of it.

  • B-Town girls fall in first conference test

    BROWNSTOWN – The Brownstown High School girls basketball team outscored Dieterich 16-10 in the final nine minutes last Thursday, but it was not enough to overcome a sluggish second-half start in a 56-42 loss.

    Senior Brooke and sophomore Megan Maxey both made baskets to close out the third quarter, and three additional Bombers scored buckets during a 10-2 run that extended into the final period and cut Dieterich’s lead from 22 to 13.

  • Wollerman scores 28 as Vandalia downs Comets

    Junior Haley Wollerman only made six field goals against Greenville on Monday.

    Believe it or not, she still scored 28 points.

    Wollerman made six 3-pointers and was perfect on free throws, making 10-of-10, in a 58-51 victory for the Vandalia High School girls basketball team.

    “That’s the best, overall, I have seen her play,” said coach Michelle McNary, “and I hope it continues, because we will win a lot of games.”

  • SC shows promise in season-opener

    FARINA – First-year coach Rick Simmons said he didn’t know exactly what to expect from the South Central High School boys basketball team in its season-opener against Odin last Friday.

    While the Cougars lost, what Simmons got was a hard-fought battle that was closer than the 47-42 final score would indicate.

    “I don’t think anyone can fault their effort,” he said.

  • Vandal boys win first SCC game at EA-WR

    ALTON – The Vandalia High School boys basketball team held East Alton-Wood River to single digits in each of the first three quarters on the way to a lopsided 58-34 conference-opening victory last Friday.

    On the offensive end, the Vandals used a balanced scoring attack in which seven players scored six points or more. Daniel Bell led all scorers with 11 points – going 2-for-2 on two-point field goals, 1-for-3 on 3-pointers and 4-for-4 on free throws.

  • Senior spotlight: Amy Walton

    Amy Walton is not known to be a prolific scorer.

    She is not counted on to be a dominant rebounder.

    She is not expected to be the primary ball-handler.

    But take the 5-foot-10 senior forward away from the floor, and coach Michelle McNary said the Lady Vandals probably would not have a 4-1 record this season.

  • South Central boys start with two games; Vets to be honored on Saturday

    The South Central High School boys basketball team will open its season with back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday.

    The Cougars will host Odin – which just finished 4-0 in the Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament – on Friday at 6:15 p.m.

    On Saturday, South Central will travel to Flora for another 6:15 p.m. start. All veterans will receive free admission to that game and will be honored at halftime.

    The Cougars are under the direction of first-year head coach Rick Simmons, who was a longtime assistant at South Central.

  • St. Elmo opens season at Neoga on Friday

    While not yet to play at home, the St. Elmo High School boys basketball team will begin its season on Friday, traveling to Neoga for a 6:15 p.m. tipoff.

    The Eagles will then travel to Cowden-Herrick on Tuesday.

    Coach Greg Feezel said his team must “grow up in a hurry” to be successful, but it does return three starters from last season that give the Eagles a young, but experienced, core.

    Sophomore Connor Beasley and juniors Ben Sperry and Blaine Scholes combined to average 20.3 points and 14.8 rebounds per game last season.
