  • Senior spotlight: Amy Walton

    Amy Walton is not known to be a prolific scorer.

    She is not counted on to be a dominant rebounder.

    She is not expected to be the primary ball-handler.

    But take the 5-foot-10 senior forward away from the floor, and coach Michelle McNary said the Lady Vandals probably would not have a 4-1 record this season.

  • South Central boys start with two games; Vets to be honored on Saturday

    The South Central High School boys basketball team will open its season with back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday.

    The Cougars will host Odin – which just finished 4-0 in the Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament – on Friday at 6:15 p.m.

    On Saturday, South Central will travel to Flora for another 6:15 p.m. start. All veterans will receive free admission to that game and will be honored at halftime.

    The Cougars are under the direction of first-year head coach Rick Simmons, who was a longtime assistant at South Central.

  • St. Elmo opens season at Neoga on Friday

    While not yet to play at home, the St. Elmo High School boys basketball team will begin its season on Friday, traveling to Neoga for a 6:15 p.m. tipoff.

    The Eagles will then travel to Cowden-Herrick on Tuesday.

    Coach Greg Feezel said his team must “grow up in a hurry” to be successful, but it does return three starters from last season that give the Eagles a young, but experienced, core.

    Sophomore Connor Beasley and juniors Ben Sperry and Blaine Scholes combined to average 20.3 points and 14.8 rebounds per game last season.

  • Patoka JH boys fall to ALJH

    The Patoka Junior High boys basketball team was defeated, 43-32, by Altamont Lutheran on Monday.

    The Warriors nearly erased a six-point deficit in the second quarter, cutting a 10-4 ALJH lead to 17-14 at halftime.

    Patoka managed just two points in the third quarter, however, allowing ALJH to take a commanding lead. The Warriors did score 16 points in the fourth quarter to finish the game on a strong note.

  • Ramsey seventh-graders get revenge on Sorento

    After Sorento defeated the Ramsey Junior High seventh-grade basketball team for the Ramsey Seventh-Grade Tournament title, coach Matt Belusko said he hoped the Rams would win the next matchup.

    On Tuesday night, they did, downing the Greyhounds, 18-12.

    The eighth-grade team defeated Sorento, 40-33.

  • Vandalia eighth-graders end season with loss to Greenville at regionals

    The Vandalia Junior High eighth-grade girls basketball team lost in the first round of the regional tournament on Monday, falling to Greenville, 24-11.

    Coach Todd Marquardt said he thought his team would have the opportunity to surprise Greenville in the game after it won its final two regular-season games.

  • Bomber girls improve to 3-0; defeat South Central

    The Brownstown High School girls basketball team pushed its record to 3-0 on Monday, by defeating South Central, 52-25.

    The Bombers trailed, 10-8, after the first quarter but scored 15 points in the second quarter. Senior Brooke Maxey scored six of those points.

    Senior Morgan Myers scored seven of her game-high 14 points in the third quarter, while Brownstown held the Cougars to seven points in taking a 26-23 lead.

  • Ramsey finishes third at own tournament

    The Ramsey High School boys basketball team’s offense was unable to produce more than 40 points in losses to Patoka and Christ Our Rock Lutheran as it struggled to a third-place finish in the Ramsey Thanksgiving Tournament.

    Seniors Blake Hadley and Jordan Johnson were both named to the All-Tournament team, after combining to score 23 points per game.

    The Patoka defense held Ramsey to just 20 points through the first thee quarters of a 46-35  loss last Wednesday.

  • Patoka takes second at Ramsey Tournament

    Patoka edged Ramsey, 46-35, in the final game of the Ramsey Thanksgiving Tournament last Wednesday to finish second to Christ Our Rock Lutheran, which went 3-0 to win the tourney.

    Zach Thompson and Sawyer Potter were named to the All-Tournament team.

    Ramsey and Patoka were knotted at seven after the first quarter of their matchup, but senior Cody Allen scored seven points for the Warriors, as they opened a 25-13 advantage over Ramsey. Allen had a game-high 11 points.
