  • South Central girls fall to Woodlawn

    The South Central High School girls basketball team lost a home game to Woodlawn on Saturday, 44-26.

    Canceled on Tuesday and Friday due to inclement weather, the Cougars were playing their first game in 10 days. South Central was rusty from the get-go, scoring just five points in the first quarter.

    The Cougars, however, did not give up, despite a seven-point halftime deficit.

  • Bell and Guerrero end fall athletic careers

    They toiled for four years.

    This is a special edition of the College Report. Today, instead of bringing you information on multiple athletes, we have an article featuring just two athletes, Rachel Bell and Maribel Guerrero. Bell recently finished her NCAA Division I cross country career with Iowa State University, while Guerrero finished her volleyball career at Rockford College.

  • St. Elmo finishes second in own Holiday Tournament

    ST. ELMO – A defensive lapse by St. Elmo at the end of the first quarter may have cost it the championship at its own tournament Saturday night.

    Leading 14-4 late in the period, the Eagles allowed Altamont to shoot three 3-pointers in the final 2:20 to trim that lead to 17-14.

    “That was probably the biggest breakdown we had all night long,” said St. Elmo coach Greg Feezel. “They took advantage.”

  • Vandalia girls drop third straight to Altamont

    Not much has gone well for the Vandalia High School girls basketball team lately.

    South Central Conference games against both Litchfield and Pana were canceled due to inclement weather last week, and then the Vandals lost to Altamont, 57-48, on Saturday.

    In that game, Vandalia fell behind by 10 with 1:49 left in the first quarter and did not improve on that deficit by halftime, trailing 27-17.

    Altamont scored seven of its first-half baskets on second- or third-chance shots, while holding the Vandals to just seven first-quarter points.

  • Vandals 4-0 in SCC play after another road win

    LITCHFIELD – The Vandalia boys basketball squad employed its trademark smothering pressure defense and balanced scoring as it downed Litchfield, 69-49, Saturday afternoon in a game rescheduled from Friday because of icy road conditions.

    Dathan Berning once again led the offensive attack with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field, but four of his teammates also scored in double figures. Leyton Godoyo and Bryan Hosick had 13 points apiece, while Marty Johnson and Nathan Henna each added 10. Johnson and Hosick both had five assists.

  • Bizarro Basketball

    ST. ELMO – It was a game 70 hours in the making – and even that wasn’t long enough.

    Brownstown senior Zach Rigdon shot a 3-pointer with approximately two-tenths of a second left in regulation to tie the game at 37, but South Central won 56-51 in triple overtime, finishing off a game that had three times been postponed.

  • Altamont wins St. Elmo Tourney

    ST. ELMO -- The Altamont High School boys basketball team defeated St. Elmo, 59-54, in the championship game of the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament Saturday night.

    Ryan Heiden, an Indians senior, was named tournament MVP.

    Beecher City defeated South Central in the third-place game, Cowden-Herrick defeated Brownstown for the consolation championship and Mulberry Grove beat Ramsey in the seventh-place game.

  • Friday Sports Cancellations

    The Vandalia High School boys and girls teams will not play tonight, and Saturday's girls game has been moved to 1 p.m.

    The boys were scheduled to play at Litchfield Friday night. That game will now be at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Litchfield.

    The girls were scheduled to face Pana tonight at 5 p.m. as a makeup for Thursday's game. That game has been canceled and a makeup date is to be announced. Saturday's home game against Altamont has been moved from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Thursday sports cancellations

    The Vandalia High School girls basketball team and the Vandalia Junior High boys basketball teams will not play tonight. In addition, icy road conditions have given the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament another setback.

    The girls game has been rescheduled for Friday night, with the JV game beginning at 5 p.m. in Pana. The Lady Vandals will host Altamont at 11 a.m. on Saturday as scheduled.

    The junior high boys' games, also against Pana, have yet to be rescheduled.

  • Slow starts doom Lady Vandals in two losses

    The Vandalia High School girls basketball team scored no more than 20 points in the first half of losses to Neoga and Hillsboro last week.

    Against Hillsboro last Thursday, the Vandals fell behind 30-14 at halftime. They did score 25 points in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit in a 60-52 loss.

    On Saturday, Vandalia traveled to Neoga and held a 20-18 halftime lead, but the Indians scored 36 second-half points en route to a 54-44 win.
