  • Wesclin wins VHT; Vandalia takes fourth

    Wesclin won its record eighth Vandalia Holiday Tournament, defeating Flora in overtime, 57-51, on Thursday night. Flora's Paul Knapp committed a turnover with about a second left in regulation, which forced the extra period.

    Vandalia fell to Pana in overtime, 77-65, in the third-place game. Pana's Mitchell Beyers hit a 3-pointer with about half a second left in regulation to force the extra period.

    In the fifth-place game, Stew-Stras upset Altamont in overtime, 68-62. Matt Tabbert had 20 points and 20 rebounds for the Comets.

  • Vandals to play for third at VHT

    The Vandalia High School boys basketball team will play for third place at its own holiday tournament on Thursday.

    The No. 4 Vandals lost to No. 1 Flora on Wednesday night and will face third-seeded Pana on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

    Flora will play No. 2 Wesclin in the championship game at 8 p.m.

    Other games on Thursday are:

    Ninth-place: No. 7 St. Elmo vs. No. 10 South Central, 2 p.m.
    Seventh-place: No. 9 Shelbyvillle vs. No. 8 Greenville, 3:30 p.m.
    Fifth-place: No. 5 Altamont vs. No. 6 Stew-Stras, 5 p.m.

  • South Central girls winless at Dieterich

    The South Central High School girls basketball team was 0-3 at the Dieterich Holiday Tournament through Tuesday.

    On Tuesday, the Cougars lost to North Clay, 40-33.

    Senior Alexis Phillips scored all 18 of her points in the second half, including 12 in the fourth quarter as South Central tried to overcome a small deficit.

    North Clay, however, used double-team defense against senior Ashley Pollard, limiting her to just eight points in the game.

  • Brownstown girls 1-1 at Okaw Valley

    The Brownstown High School girls basketball team lost to Mt. Zion, 63-36, on the second day of the Okaw Valley Holiday Tournament on Tuesday.

    Mt. Zion scored 22 first-quarter points and led the Bombers by 10 at halftime. It again posted 22 points in the third quarter, pushing its lead to  49-26.

    Senior Abby Hill led Brownstown with 15 points and four rebounds.

    On Monday, the Bombers defeated Deland-Weldon, 52-29, in their opening game of the tournament.

    Senior Morgan Myers paced the Bombers with 18 points and eight rebounds.

    The Vandalia Holiday Tournament opened with plenty of excitement on Monday.

    After two days, the tournament standings are:

    1. Flora is 3-0
    2. Wesclin is 3-0
    3. Pana is 3-0
    4. Vandalia is 3-0
    5. Altamont is 1-2
    6. Stew-Stras is 0-2
    7. St. Elmo is 0-3
    8. Greenville is 0-3
    9. Shelbyville is 1-2
    10. South Central is 0-2

  • Thompson named all-tournament as Patoka finishes sixth at Wayne City

    Senior Zach Thompson was named to the all-tournament team, but the Patoka High School boys basketball team lost to Zeigler-Royalton, 52-39, in the fifth-place game of the Wayne City Holiday Tournament.

    The tournament was pushed back because of inclement weather several times, postponing Patoka's games three times.

    By the time the weather cooperated, Patoka had gone 2-3, with wins against Grayville and Clay City.

  • Johnson has double-double in loss

    Ramsey senior Jordan Johnson had a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds, but it was not enough to overcome Sandoval in a 71-55 loss.

    The Rams (1-9) led by three at halftime and were tied with Sandoval at 44 after three periods, but they allowed 27 fourth-quarter points, while only scoring 11 themselves.

    Sandoval's Warren Jones scored 31 points in the contest, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Senior Blake Hadley led the Rams in scoring with 17.

  • Bombers at .500 after home loss to Altamont

    The Brownstown High School girls basketball team evened its record at 5-5 after losing to Altamont, 49-34, on Tuesday.

    The Bombers trailed by two after the first quarter, but in the next two periods, Brownstown was outscored 28-12.

    Altamont was only able to score six points in the fourth quarter, but Brownstown's nine-point effort was not nearly enough to put them back in the game.

    Senior Brooke Maxey was the lone Bomber to score in double-figures, with 12 points. She also had a team-high seven rebounds.
