  • South Central athletes teaming with Engel Bros. for test drives

    South Central High School athletes and FBLA members will be working at the Ford "Drive One 4 UR School Event" on Saturday at Engel Bros. Ford in Farina from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

    Drivers who are 18 years and older with a valid driver's license are encouraged to attend the event and test drive a vehicle.

    SCHS will receive $20 for each test drive, up to $6,000.

    Only one driver per address is permitted.

  • Lady Aces win regional title

    The Mulberry Grove High School softball team won a regional championship by defeating Odin, 11-1, on Thursday afternoon. With the victory, the Lady Aces will battle the winner of the Altamont Regional next Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the Woodlawn Sectional.

  • Hill advances to state finals

    St. Elmo sophomore Molly Hill advanced to the finals in the discus throw at the Illinois High School Association state meet.

    She threw 113 feet, 6 inches to make the finals; her throw was the seventh best.

    The finals begin at noon on Saturday at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

  • Two locals qualify for state meet

    Vandalia junior Sierah Ruffner and St. Elmo sophomore Molly Hill have both qualified for this weekend’s state track meet.

    Ruffner cleared state qualifying height of 5-feet, 2 inches in high jump to place second at the Newton Sectional and make the state meet, and Hill threw the discus 113 feet, 2 inches to win the sectional.

  • Buscher named boys basketball coach

    The Vandalia school board on Tuesday approved the decision to hire Brian Buscher as the head coach of the high school boys basketball team.

    Buscher, who has served as a basketball assistant coach for several years, will now coach two varsity teams at VCHS, as he is also the head coach of the softball team.

    "Through softball, he has shown that he can do the job of a head coach," said Superintendent Rich Well. "This is an opportunity for him to take on the task at hand and give it a shot."

  • Lady Rams set for title game

    ALTAMONT – Shaunna Rainey stood on the back of the bench in the seventh inning of Tuesday’s regional semifinal game, showering her teammates with encouragement from the perch she called her “rally spot.”

    It turned out that that wouldn't even her biggest contribution in the inning.

    The junior blasted a triple to center field to cap a six-run inning that gave the second-seeded Lady Rams a 10-5 comeback win against No. 3 St. Anthony and a spot in Saturday’s championship game against Altamont.

  • Jr. Vandals sending 11 athletes to state

    Five school records fell and 11 athletes qualified for the state meet at last Saturday’s Jr. High sectional meet in Effingham.

    The Illinois Elementary School Association Class AA state meet will be held at the Eastside Center in East Peoria on Friday and Saturday.

    Seventh-grader Curtis Gordon broke his own school records in both of his individual events and was the first leg of a relay that set a record.

  • Jr. Vandals break four conference records

    Four Junior Mid-State Conference records were broken by Vandalia track athletes at last Tuesday’s conference meet in Litchfield.

    Eighth-grader Jalea Paslay set the conference mark in the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:33.9, while the other three records were set in the pole vault.

    Curtis Gordon (9 feet, 9 inches) set the seventh-grade boys mark, Emma Meyer (7 feet, 6 inches) set the seventh-grade girls record and Karlie Bright (8 feet, 3 inches) set the eighth-grade girls mark.
