  • Austin takes 6th at state in 110-meter hurdles

    CHARLESTON – A school record and a spot on the medal stand made Vandalia senior Quenten Austin’s final high school track meet a memorable one.

    Austin broke the school record in the 110-meter hurdles (0:15.38) during last Thursday’s state preliminaries, and he went on to match his time to finish sixth in Saturday’s finals to receive his first state medal in three tries.

    Taking his place on the medal stand, Austin said, was everything he imagined and more.

  • Making school history: Mulberry Grove softball team wins school's first sectional title in any sport, but falls at super-sectional

    CARBONDALE – Two days after making school history, the Mulberry Grove softball team was shut out for the first time on the season at Monday’s Carbondale Super-Sectional, falling 14-0 to a very talented Goreville squad.

    The Lady Aces (23-5) came into the game aware that the Lady Blackcats had a lineup full of disciplined hitters and a tough pitcher, but Goreville was simply overwhelming.

  • Bushue leads Cougars to semifinal win

    EFFINGHAM – Senior Colby Bushue made sure that if South Central was going to lose in the sectional semifinals last Wednesday, it wasn’t going to be because he didn’t give his best effort.

    After allowing hits to the first two Windsor batters to spot the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead, Bushue struck out the next five batters, started a two-run rally with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first and then drove home two more runs with a single in the second inning as the Cougars cruised to an 11-2 victory.

  • Mulberry Grove's run ends at super-sectional

    CARBONDALE — The Lady Aces ran into a fundamentally sound Goreville team at Monday's super-sectional, falling 14-0.

    Mulberry Grove got a leadoff single from Kayla Zimmerman, but that would be the team's only hit of the game.

    The Lady Aces had a 23-5 record on the season.

    Vandalia senior Quenten Austin placed sixth in the state finals of the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday. He tied his school record with a time of 0:15.39.

  • Lady Aces win sectional title

    WOODLAWN - Mulberry Grove fended off a late comeback attempt by Woodlawn to win Saturday's sectional title game, 8-5.

    With the win, the Lady Aces advance to Monday's super-sectional game in Carbondale. Mulberry Grove will face Goreville at noon on the campus of Southern Illinois University.

  • Austin makes state finals in 110-meter hurdles

    CHARLESTON — Vandalia senior Quenten Austin qualified for the state track finals in the 110-meter hurdles after placing fifth in the prelims on Thursday.

    Austin, who was seeded 10th, finished the race in a school record 0:15.39; the winner in the prelims ran a 0:14.54. State finals are on Saturday, with running events beginning at 10 a.m. at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

    Austin placed 11th in the 300-meter hurdles, just missing the cutoff for the finals.

  • South Central scatters hits to win sectional semifinal game

    EFFINGHAM - South Central scattered 13 hits to all parts of the field and got a strong pitching performance from senior Colby Bushue to beat Windsor, 11-2, in the sectional semifinals on Wednesday, giving the Cougars a spot in Saturday's 10 a.m. sectional championship game against St. Anthony.

    The title game will be played at Evergreen Hollow Park in Effingham. Earlier in the spring, South Central lost to St. Anthony, 6-5.
