To Marty Johnson, it was just another shot.

But the 3-pointer from the left wing had a perfect angle, and there was little doubt it would fall.

And with the resounding swish of the net, he became the 25th male or female from Vandalia Community High School to score 1,000 career points, securing the landmark 10 minutes into a 73-41 loss to Teutopolis on Tuesday.

"It's a real nice accomplishment to have," Johnson said. "But I give a lot of credit to my teammates. A lot of good players give me the ball when they could have shot."

The Vandalia Junior High School basketball teams battled Litchfield last Thursday. The seventh-graders lost, 35-24, and the eighth-graders lost, 36-27.

It's been a tough season for an inexperienced South Central High School girls basketball team.

But that has not stopped the girls from giving a full effort each game, which is something that has left first-year coach Gary Kapper pleased.

"We played from the start of the game and were still getting on the floor at the end of the game," Kapper said after a 53-48 loss to North Clay on Monday. "The girls worked very hard tonight."

The Lady Cougars (3-12) will play three straight home games, starting next Thursday against Altamont.
