  • Lady Vandals rally to fend off Gillespie

    With 43.7 seconds left in the third quarter of Saturday’s game against Gillespie, Lady Vandals coach Michelle McNary saw an opportunity that would help the team gain its first lead of the afternoon.

    Gillespie had just committed its sixth foul of the half, and if the Lady Vandals could continue drawing fouls, she believed they could gain the lead through free-throw shooting.

    Just 5.3 seconds later, freshman Megan Godoyo drew contact on her way to the basket and made two free throws to tie the game at 35.

  • Wrestlers rout rivals on senior night

    It was amazing it didn’t snow.

    The Vandalia High School wrestling team finally got to salute its seniors last Wednesday before a triangular with Carlinville and East Alton-Wood River that had been twice delayed by snow storms.

    Vandalia’s three seniors – Brenden Cripe, Justin Hill and John Vosholler – made the wait worthwhile, each earning at least one victory on the night, which saw the Vandals down the Cavaliers, 72-0, and the Oilers, 68-6.

  • Vandals slip past Hillsboro on road

    HILLSBORO – The Vandals held Hillsboro to fewer than 10 points in all but the second quarter as they notched their first win in three games last Tuesday, downing the Hilltoppers, 48-39.

    Vandalia entered the contest having lost four of its last six games.

    The Vandals never trailed in the contest, but each time it took a lead of at least seven points, Hillsboro slowly inched back into the game.

  • Inconsistencies still plague Vandals in SCC win

    Vandalia capped off the first half against Litchfield on Friday with an 11-0 run to take a 16-point advantage to the locker room, but mental lapses caught up with the Vandals in the second half, leaving coach Kevin Jackson confused after a 56-43 victory.

    It wasn’t a gradual comeback for the Purple Panthers, as they came out with determination, opening the second half on a 10-0 run and forcing the Vandals into four turnovers in the first three minutes.

  • St. Elmo senior Brooke Maxey to play volleyball for Kaskaskia College

    ST. ELMO – One of the area’s hardest hitting volleyball players has signed a letter of intent to play collegiately.

    At a small gathering in the high school library on Friday, St. Elmo senior Brooke Maxey signed to play volleyball for Kaskaskia College for the next two years. She also said there is a chance KC will offer a softball scholarship if scouts are impressed this spring.

  • Sports cancellations -- Tuesday, Feb. 1

    The Vandalia High School boys basketball game at Pana has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 7.

    The Vandalia High School girls basketball game at Greenville has been canceled and will not be made up. Instead the first-round regional tournament game will count in the conference standings. That game is on Saturday.

    St. Elmo boys basketball against Teutopolis has been canceled and rescheduled for a later date.

    Ramsey boys basketball against Altamont has been canceled.

    All Brownstown athletic events have been canceled.

  • Junior High sports briefs

    Eighth-grade boys regional schedule

    Area eighth-grade boys basketball teams will compete at the regional tournament next week.

    Third-seeded Vandalia received a bye in the first round and will face No. 2 Pana next Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. at Central A&M.

    The winner of that game will likely face No. 1 Greenville on Thursday.

    Fourth-seeded St. Elmo faces No. 5 Beecher City on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Beecher City.

    The winner will play top-seeded Ramsey on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.
