  • Season in review: Boys Basketball

    St. Elmo did not have the best record in the area, nor did it have the flashiest playing style.

    What it did have was a desire to win, which helped the Eagles (13-16) advance to the sectional tournament for the first time since the early 1990s.

    In that game, St. Elmo lost to state qualifier Woodlawn, but the Eagles return all but two of their top six players, so another run could be in their future next season.

    Vandalia had the area's best record, with a mark of 17-11.

  • Vandalia eighth-graders end remarkable run at sectional

    CARLINVILLE – There is something to be said for determined play at any level of athletics.

    The Lady Vandal eighth-grade volleyball team showed why on Monday, despite a straight-set loss to Carlinville at the sectional tournament.

    At the end of the first set, Carlinville’s Talesha Scott served eight straight points, including seven aces, to put the Lady Warriors ahead, 23-11.

    Vandalia coach Geri Reuss, however, called a timeout in an effort to refocus her team and kill off Carlinville’s momentum.

  • Field of Dreams upgrades HS diamond

    Improvements to the high school baseball field that the Field of Dreams committee hoped to have completed by the start of baseball season have been finished on schedule.

    The improvements included renovation of the backstop and dugouts on the high school field, a warning track on the high school softball field and limestoning the softball field on Locust Street.

    Vandalia High School baseball coach Luke Holht said the latest improvements make the high school baseball field one the best among South Central Conference schools.

  • Patoka starts HS track program

    PATOKA – Patoka High School will field a high school track and field team for the first time this spring.

    The move comes as a continuation of the junior high program, which was started by Superintendent Mike Conlon last spring.

    “We started the junior high program last year, and we hated to see the kids not have the opportunity (to continue), so we started a track program,” said Conlon, who doubles as the track coach.

  • The College Report: Eric Hobbie named POY for second time

    He missed a good portion of his senior year to injury.

    But, Vandalia grad and McKendree University senior Eric Hobbie returned to play in every single American Midwest Conference game that McKendree played. The impressive comeback, combined with his impressive play, has earned Hobbie the AMC Player of the Year award for the second straight season.

  • Sports Briefs (March 17)

    Cripe places fifth at state

    Jr. Club wrestler Blake Cripe finished fifth at the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation state tournament on Saturday.

    Cripe advanced to the championship quarterfinals, and consolation semifinals before battling in the fifth-place match.

    Bobby Bradley and Dalton Blankenship also participated in the state meet for the Vandals.

    Six Jr. Club wrestlers will take part in the midget state tournament in Danville this weekend.

    St. Elmo baseball and softball games for today have been canceled.

    The baseball game at Shelbyville has been reschduled for tomorrow at 4:15.

    The softball game against Flora has also been canceled.

  • Vandal eighth-graders win regional title

    The dream continues.

    Vandalia's eighth-grade volleyball team (19-0) came back from a stunning 1-25 loss in the second set to beat Meredian (19-5) in three sets to win the regional championship on its home floor.

    They advance to play Carlinville in Carlinville on Monday at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the state tournament.
