    ST. ELMO – Ramsey coach Bill Eddy said goodbye to a talented senior class after the Rams closed their season with a 60-44 loss to Altamont in the regional tournament on Monday, and he will now focus on reinventing

    Ramsey basketball with a talented group of youngsters.

    Freshman Tyler Knisley, and sophomores Tyler Pryor and Ryan Black will form the nucleus of next season’s team, which will also get several additions from this season’s state-qualifying eighth-grade team.

  • Fast start propels Vandals by Indians

    Coach Kevin Jackson estimated the Vandals haven’t had a start like they did against Altamont last Thursday in five years

    Of course, it’s not every game that Vandalia’s high school boys basketball team posts 30 points in one quarter.

    But it did just that against the Indians, propelling the Vandals to a 72-54 win.

    “This is the direction we want to and need to be heading,” Jackson said. “You want to be playing your best basketball at the end of the season, and hopefully, that’s what occurring.”

  • Vandals celebrate seniors with win

    Both Vandalia seniors played a significant role in helping the Vandal boys basketball team produce its best offensive output of the season on Saturday when a superb effort powered the Vandals by Pana, 78-73, in the regular-season finale.

    Honored before the game along with cheerleader Courtney Gordon and several pep band members, Marty Johnson and Daniel Bell combined to score 21 points and grab nine rebounds in the Vandals’ win.

  • St. Elmo beats Patoka to advance in regional

    ST. ELMO – Eagles coach Greg Feezel was not expecting his team to produce a 38-point blowout in the first round of the regional tournament on Monday.

    But that’s what happened, as St. Elmo soared to a 67-29 win against Patoka.

    “I was (actually) concerned, because we just got done playing Beecher (City), we hadn’t seen Patoka in a while and we had Altamont lurking,” Feezel said. “I thought, ‘I hope we don’t overlook (them).’”

  • Vandal wrestlers qualify for state as team

    ROXANA – After defeating Benton, 49-21, on Tuesday, the Vandalia High School wrestling team will battle Prairie Central High School in Bloomington on Saturday in the first round of the Illinois High School Association Dual Team Wrestling Tournament.

    The first-round match starts at 9 a.m. at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum. If the Vandals win, they will face either Wilmington or Stillman Valley in the semifinals.

    Coach Jason Clay said that as long as his kids wrestle balanced matches, they will have an opportunity to find success at state.

  • Vandals wrestlers win just one bout at state, but experience gained will help next season

    CHAMPAIGN – Senior Justin Hill was the only Vandal wrestler to make it to the second day of the Illinois High School Association’s Individual State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, and after being roughed up in the championship semifinals, he was unable to place.

    Stillman Valley’s J.J. Whaley (39-7) defeated Hill by technical fall in just 2:38, but he went to the mat hard 49 seconds into the match and required assistance from a trainer.
