  • The Next Level: graduated athlete round (May 10)

    Tanner Bushue • Pitcher/Minor Leagues
    •May 1 – Bushue, a South Central graduate, was reassigned to extended spring training after a rough start to his season with the Class A Lexington Legends. In six appearances (three starts), Bushue was 0-3 with an 18.82 ERA. He had allowed 27 hits and 23 earned runs in 11 innings of work, while striking out 10.

    Several Jr. High track athletes going to state

    Patoka eighth-grader Taylor Issak qualified for Saturday's state meet in three events.

    Issak qualified for the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association Class S state meet in Salem in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and long jump.

    In her three years with PJH, Issak had qualified for the state meet in six events.

    In addition, 16 Brownstown athletes have qualified for the Illinois Elementary School Association Class A state meet.

  • Vandalia baseball, softball games canceled

    The Vandalia baseball and softball games scheduled for Monday have been canceled.

  • Lady Vandals now to play in Vandalia

    The softball game between Vandalia and Marquette Catholic will now be played in Vandalia due to wet grounds in Alton.

  • Vandalia, St. Elmo baseball games canceled

    The Vandalia baseball game at Litchfield has been canceled due to a school activity scheduling conflict at Litchfield. It will be made up on May 8 at 4:30 p.m. (varsity only). In addition, St. Elmo at North Clay has been canceled for Friday.

  • Jackson stepping down as boys basketball coach

    Kevin Jackson has stepped down as head boys basketball coach at Vandalia Community High School.

    His resignation was accepted by the school board at a special meeting on Tuesday night. He will maintain his roles as athletic director and driver’s education teacher.

    “Priorities change over time,” Jackson said. “I still love to compete with the guys that we have here, but priorities change.

    “It was an extremely, extremely difficult decision.”

  • Ruffner is SCC high jump champ

    CARLINVILLE – Junior Sierah Ruffner was the lone champion for Vandalia at Tuesday’s South Central Conference girls track meet, but first-year Gena Nance was left satisfied by a solid team-effort that earned the Lady Vandals sixth place.

    Ruffner placed first in the high jump, clearing 5 feet on her third attempt at that height. She was assured of first place after clearing 4 feet, 10 inches, however, because neither of the two individuals who tied for second place could clear that height.

    St. Elmo High School senior Blaine Scholes has signed to continue his athletic and academic careers at Illinois College. Scholes committed to the IC baseball team last week.

  • Lady Vandals dispatch Pana

    The Lady Vandals put to rest a nine-game losing streak by defeating Pana, 7-5, last Wednesday.

    The victory didn’t come easily, however, as Pana had several base runners in all but one inning and Vandalia’s defense committed five errors.

    Senior Molli Tedrick flirted with disaster over the first three innings, loading the bases in the first and second innings, and allowing runners to reach second and third with no outs in the third.

    The defense bailed her out each time, committing zero errors in those innings to keep Pana scoreless.

  • Vandals fall to Pana, Greenville in conference ballgames

    The Vandalia baseball team was unable to end its losing streak, falling in two conference games in the past week.

    The Vandals fell at Pana last Wednesday, 7-5, and dropped a road game at Greenville on Tuesday, 8-0.

    Vandalia has lost 11 games in a row and is now 6-14 (2-6 South Central Conference) for the season.

    Against Pana, senior Dathan Berning had a pair of doubles, but the Panthers scored five times in the bottom of the first inning and maintained control throughout the rest of the game.
