ALTAMONT – St. Elmo was able to take a 14-8 lead in the first quarter, but consistent play from Woodlawn on both sides of the ball in the final three periods doomed the Eagles during a 61-38 loss in the first round of the sectional tournament last Wednesday.

The loss marked the final game in the careers of regulars Garrett Buzzard and Kase Stolte – who both exited the game to standing ovations – and role player Dylan Bullard.

For the first time in seven years, the Brownstown High School girls basketball team finished at .500, with a 12-12 mark.

Five different players – each of the starters – led the Lady Bombers in scoring at least once, with seniors Abby Hill (11 times) and Kel-C Sefton (six times) doing it most often.

Senior Morgan Myers (four), senior Brooke Maxey (three) and sophomore Megan Maxey (one) were the others.

Naturally, Hill and Sefton ended the season as Brownstown's scoring leaders, posting 11.2 and  9.3 points per game, respectively.

BLOOMINGTON – It was a shame either team had to lose.

Vandalia and Prairie Central engaged in a chess match during the first round of Saturday’s Illinois High School Association Dual Team Wrestling Tournament at U.S. Cellular Arena, altering their lineups to match each other’s strengths.

The end result?

A hard-fought 32-31 win for the Hawks, and a gut-wrenching early exit for the Vandals that left some of their toughest wrestlers consoling each other in the hallway leading out of the arena.
