  • St. Elmo wins first regional title since 1992-93

    ST. ELMO – The Eagles boys basketball team completed an improbable comeback on Friday by dispatching North Clay to win the school’s first regional championship since the 1992-93 season.

    St. Elmo started the season 4-13, and at times, struggled to score 40 points in a game, leaving coach Greg Feezel unsure of how to get his team, which he felt was talented, onto a winning streak.

    He never gave up on his players, however, guiding them past top-seeded Altamont last Wednesday to propel them into the regional title game, which the Eagles won, 40-35.

  • Wednesday's regional boys basketball results

    The St. Elmo High School boys basketball team is the only area team remaining in the Illinois High School Association playoffs after it defeated No. 1 Altamont, 47-42, on Wednesday to advance to the regional championship game.

    St. Elmo, a No. 4 seed, will face second-seeded North Clay in St. Elmo on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

    Area players left in the 3-point shootout are: Connor Beasley and Garrett Buzzard of St. Elmo, Harley Steed and John Rickman of Mulberry Grove, Johnnie Clift of Patoka, and Andrew Snow of South Central.

  • Lady Cougars lose makeup game to Wayne City, 48-42

    The South Central High School girls basketball team thought its season was finished after the regional tournament, but Wayne City came to them to make up a game that had been canceled due to bad weather.

    The Lady Cougars nearly won the game last Wednesday, despite having practiced just once the week before.

    South Central scored 30 points in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome a slow start during a 48-42 loss.

    Lady Vandal eighth-graders win own volleyball tournament

    On Saturday, the Vandalia Junior High eighth-grade volleyball team won its own tournament for the second straight year, defeating Litchfield, South Central and Ramsey.

    Leading players in the three-set, 21-25, 25-13, 15-11, win against Litchfield were: Ali Sasse, nine points, six kills and three aces; Madison Click, nine points and five aces; and Jori Wagner, nine points and three aces.

    After slow start, South Central beats Brownstown at regionals

    Brownstown and South Central were tied at five at the end of the first quarter, but the Cougars, in typical fashion, got things going after that during a 57-30 win on Tuesday.

    With the win, No. 3 South Central advanced to face second-seeded North Clay in the regional quarterfinals in St. Elmo at 8:10 p.m. on Wednesday.

  • Eddy excited about future at Ramsey

    ST. ELMO – Ramsey coach Bill Eddy said goodbye to a talented senior class after the Rams closed their season with a 60-44 loss to Altamont in the regional tournament on Monday, and he will now focus on reinventing

    Ramsey basketball with a talented group of youngsters.

    Freshman Tyler Knisley, and sophomores Tyler Pryor and Ryan Black will form the nucleus of next season’s team, which will also get several additions from this season’s state-qualifying eighth-grade team.

  • Fast start propels Vandals by Indians

    Coach Kevin Jackson estimated the Vandals haven’t had a start like they did against Altamont last Thursday in five years

    Of course, it’s not every game that Vandalia’s high school boys basketball team posts 30 points in one quarter.

    But it did just that against the Indians, propelling the Vandals to a 72-54 win.

    “This is the direction we want to and need to be heading,” Jackson said. “You want to be playing your best basketball at the end of the season, and hopefully, that’s what occurring.”

  • Vandals celebrate seniors with win

    Both Vandalia seniors played a significant role in helping the Vandal boys basketball team produce its best offensive output of the season on Saturday when a superb effort powered the Vandals by Pana, 78-73, in the regular-season finale.

    Honored before the game along with cheerleader Courtney Gordon and several pep band members, Marty Johnson and Daniel Bell combined to score 21 points and grab nine rebounds in the Vandals’ win.
