  • Vandal wrestlers swallow tough loss at state

    BLOOMINGTON – It was a shame either team had to lose.

    Vandalia and Prairie Central engaged in a chess match during the first round of Saturday’s Illinois High School Association Dual Team Wrestling Tournament at U.S. Cellular Arena, altering their lineups to match each other’s strengths.

    The end result?

    A hard-fought 32-31 win for the Hawks, and a gut-wrenching early exit for the Vandals that left some of their toughest wrestlers consoling each other in the hallway leading out of the arena.

  • South Central invited to join National Trail

    South Central High School’s athletic teams have been invited to join the National Trail Conference, beginning with the 2012-13 academic year.

    The move to invite the Cougars from the Midland Trail Conference was approved by a 9-2 vote at a meeting last week of NTC member schools. It will not become official until approved by South Central’s school board, which should come at its March meeting.

  • Seventh-graders end season in title game

    ASSUMPTION – A very strong Meridian Blue Mound seventh-grade volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack to deny the Lady Vandals the regional championship on Tuesday night at Central A&M Middle School.

    Using 14 service aces and 10 kills throughout the straight set, 25-14, 25-15, win, the Hawks used a variety of different techniques, including power and finesse, to defeat Vandalia.

    “They’re very, very consistent,” said coach Jane Bell. “We haven’t played a team this good this year.”

  • Greenville defeats Vandals at regional

    GREENVILLE – For the first 12 minutes of last Wednesday’s regional tournament game, Vandalia was in complete control against Greenville.

    But once the Comets began to break the Vandals’ pressure and transition better on defense, they began to chip away at their 10-point deficit, eventually taking an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter that was too much forVandalia to overcome in a 62-59 loss.

    It seems like he has been around forever.

    But, it has only been four years.

    Vandalia grad Eric Hobbie is hoping the final stretch of his basketball career will end with a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championship.

  • Eighth-graders complete first-ever perfect season

    The Vandalia Junior High eighth-grade volleyball team completed the school's first-ever perfect season on Friday by beating Ramsey in straight sets, 25-17, 25-12, to earn a 17-0 record.

    As seventh-graders last season, the Lady Vandals had a 17-1 record.

    Jessica Sullens led the team against Ramsey with 13 points, eight service aces and two kills. Kadi Metzger also had a strong game with eight points, five service aces and four kills.

    Ali Sasse added five points, two service aces and one kill.

  • Sixth-grade boys have undefeated season

    The Vandalia Junior High sixth-grade boys basketball team won the Brownstown Tournament on Friday to complete an undefeated season with a 13-0 record.

    Coach Mark Johnson said he had a balanced team that expected to win every time they took the floor.

    "Defensively, the kids were as good as any group I have ever had, and we rebounded the ball well," he said. "They shared the ball well offensively, and it was a team effort."

    Wollerman eliminated at state

    Vandalia junior Haley Wollerman was eliminated in the first round of the state 3-point shootout at Redbird Arena in Normal last Thursday.

    Wollerman made six 3-pointers, falling three short of the tie-breaker shoot-off.

    She was one of two South Central Conference players in the shootout.

    The Class 2A champion was Allie Norton of Bloomington Central Catholic. She made 11 shots in the finals.
