  • Lady Vandals end week one at 3-2

    Effingham changed its pitcher in the top of the sixth inning twice against Vandalia on Tuesday.

    The first time, at the start of the sixth inning, led to four straight Vandalia base runners and four runs.

    The second time, when the Lady Hearts brought back starter Shelby Koenig seven batters later, led to two quick outs, which kept the Lady Vandals on the short side of a 5-4 loss.

  • Vandals lose tight game to Lincolnwood

    The Vandalia High School baseball team lost its season-opener at Raymond-Lincolnwood on Monday, falling to the Lancers, 4-3.

    The Vandals were held scoreless through the first four innings, but only trailed 2-0.

    In the top of the fifth, junior Dathan Berning smashed a three-run home run to put the Vandals ahead, 3-2. The Lancers, however, knotted the game in the bottom of the inning.

    They added another run in the bottom of the sixth and held the Vandals scoreless in the top of the seventh to earn the win.

  • Mulberry Grove, South Central battle in softball

    The Mulberry Grove High School softball team used 14 hits in defeating South Central, 9-2, on Monday.

    Nearly all of the Lady Aces' batters got on base during the game, and the team scored most of its runs in the second half of the game.

    For South Central, it was the first time the team had been outside on a field. For the past three weeks, the Lady Cougars had only been able to practice in the gym, which meant its hitters had not seen any live pitching.

  • Cougars ride strong pitching to win

    Senior Derek Harmeier picked up eight strikeouts and two relievers added three apiece as South Central defeated Mulberry Grove on Monday, 7-0.

    Harmeier's line also included just one walk and one hit allowed.

    Colby Bushue, who relieved Harmerier in the fifth inning, pitched two innings, allowing three hits and one walk.

    At the plate, the junior was 4-for-5 with three doubles.

    Sophomore Shawn Meyer finished up the stellar pitching performance with a perfect seventh inning.

  • Hall of Fame nominations open for VCHS

    Nominations for this year’s Vandalia Community High School Athletic Hall of Fame are due by May 16. Forms should be sent to Kevin Jackson, VCHS Athletic Director, 1109 N. 8th St., Vandalia, Ill. 62471. Forms are available at the high school office and may also be dropped off there.

    In order to be nominated, the following conditions must be met. The candidate must be a graduate of VCHS, a distinguished varsity team, a former coach or a supportive fan.

    The candidate must have graduated from, completed coaching at or been a supportive fan no less than five years prior to nomination.

  • Area baseball roundup (March 24)

    St. Elmo wallops Ramsey for third win
    Senior Kase Stolte was 4-for-5 with a grand slam in a nine-run fourth inning, and freshman Levi Maxey picked up his first win of the season, as the Eagles downed Ramsey, 14-1, on Tuesday.

    St. Elmo had 15 hits in the game, including three each from juniors Ben Sperry and Garrett Bartels. Maxey also hit a home run.

    For Ramsey, freshman Tyler Knisley was 1-for-3 with a single and took the loss after allowing nine runs in 3 1/3 innings.

  • South Central's Crain signs with Kaskaskia

    South Central High School senior Katie Crain has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Kaskaskia College for the next two seasons. Crain earned 159 kills for the Lady Cougars last season, helping them advance to the sectional tournament. At the collegiate level, Rahar said, Crain will mostly play defense. “We think Katie will play a lot of defense for us,” Rahar said. “She may also be a option in the front row if it comes down to that. We’re looking forward to having her on the team.” Crain is the second area player to sign with KC, after St.

  • St. Elmo softball off to 1-1 start

    The St. Elmo High School softball team is 1-1 after playing 2 1/2 games this season.

    The Lady Eagles lost to Flora, 11-1, in their season-opener last Thursday, and beat Dieterich, 12-1, in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday.

    The second game against Dieterich was suspended due to darkness after 3 1/2 innings with St. Elmo leading, 7-4.
    Despite the lopsided result against Flora, coach Tom Fedrigon said his team played as well as the Lady Wolves.

    Senior Brooke Maxey was 1-for-3.

    Morgan Myers, also a senior, took the loss in the circle and drove in Maxey in the first inning.

  • Austin, Ambuehl gets top 10s at Charleston

    Two members of the Vandalia High School boys track team recorded top 10 finishes at the Charleston Indoor Invitational at Eastern Illinois University on Saturday.

    As a team, the Vandals finished 34th out of 50 teams. On Tuesday, the team will run at Litchfield at 4:15 p.m.
