  • Vandalia baseball team has rough week

    The Vandals had a tough slate of games this past week, going 0-3 and having two games washed out by rain on Saturday.

    This week, Vandalia will host Shelbyville on Thursday and South Central on Monday. The Vandals travel to Greenville on Wednesday.

    All games will start at 4:30 p.m.

    Vandalia vs. Altamont
    Altamont defeated Vandalia, 19-8, on Tuesday.

    The Vandals led 5-3 after two innings, but the Indians piled on 10 runs in the final two innings to win.

  • Area High School Sports Roundup (April 14)

    Marty Johnson among four area players selected for KC District All-Star Game

    Vandalia senior Marty Johnson is one of four area seniors selected to play in Sunday's Kaskaskia College District All-Star Game.

    Patoka's Sawyer Potter, and South Central's Andrew Snow and Taylor Cain were also selected.

    Mulberry Grove's Harley Steed and Allen Tompkins were invited, but are unable to attend.

    Admission to the 3 p.m. game is $3 for adults and $1 for students.

  • Vandalia softball to play at home on Tuesday

    The softball game between Vandalia and Altamont scheduled for Tuesday, April 12, has been moved from Altamont to Vandalia.

    The game will be played at 4:15 p.m. at the fields between VCHS and Vandalia Elementary School.

  • Senior Spotlight: Kase the Krusher

    ST. ELMO – A grand slam earlier this season has already given St. Elmo senior Kase Stolte something from his senior year that he will always remember.

    “Me and Ben Sperry have a thing about who is leading the team in home runs, so it was a good feeling that I tied him and hit in three other guys,” Stolte said.

    Through Tuesday, they were still tied with two apiece.

    But, if it’s up to Stolte, the grand slam and contest will be just two of many memories created this season.

  • Lady Vandals top Teutopolis with Newsom's homer

    As Whitney Newsom led off the bottom of the seventh inning against Teutopolis last Thursday, Vandalia coach Brian Buscher was scrambling to find a pinch runner in the event Newsom got on base.

    “I sent (sophomore) Amber Bruno to get two JV girls, because I thought, ‘All right, she’s going to get a base hit, and I have to decide whether or not to sub in a runner,’” Buscher said.

    “I got Kylie Sellers to run for her and got Lauren Wasmuth to sub in to play third. I was stressing out about that.”

  • Vandals shut out Carlinville in SCC opener

    Sophomore Leyton Godoyo was filthy after he stole two bases and dove head-first into home during the fifth inning last Friday against Carlinville.

    But he was all smiles, because his run gave the Vandals a 10-0 win in the South Central Conference season-opener last Friday.

    Good jumps allowed Godoyo to steal both second and third base, and he advanced home after the catcher’s throw to third sailed into left field.

  • Boys and girls track teams place several in first two outdoor meets

    ALTAMONT – Sixteen top-three finishes, including seven first-place marks, helped the Vandals place second at Altamont on Tuesday.

    The boys track team would have had an opportunity to win the meet had it been able to field a team in the 4X400-meter relay, but all but two of its athletes had already participated in the maximum of four events.

    That isn’t typical for most track teams from schools the size of Vandalia, but with only 11 members, every athlete’s efforts, and points, count.

  • Board approves bid for all-weather track

    A bid for the construction of an all-weather track at Vandalia Community High School was approved by the school board on Monday.

    The bid, which came from National Erectors in Highland, was $502,500, slightly higher than the $500,000 the school received in funding.

    It had been higher, but the school opted to cut out some less important features, including paving the walkway between the high school and junior high school, asphalting the gravel area near the ticket window and some of the reworked fencing.
