  • Von Behren hired by Maryville University

    A Vandalia Community High School graduate has been hired as the head baseball coach at Maryville University, a Division II school in St. Louis.

    Seth Von Behren is the ninth coach in Maryville’s history, and the Saints will be the fourth team he has coached for at the collegiate level.

    First Vandalia tennis practice is Aug. 14

    The Vandalia High School girls tennis team will hold its first two practices on Aug. 14-15 at the high school tennis courts, from 8-11 a.m.

    All athletes must have a physical on file to participate.

    Questions should be directed to coach Kevin Schroeder at 283-0212.

    First SC volleyball practice is Aug. 13

    The South Central High School volleyball team will hold its first practice on Monday, Aug. 13, from 7:30-9:30 a.m.

  • Austin places 5th at Jr. Olympics

    Quenten Austin, a 2012 Vandalia Community High School graduate, placed fifth in the decathlon at the AAU Jr. Olympics in Humble, Tex., a suburb of Houston, this past weekend.

    Austin, who plans to compete in the event starting next spring at Carthage College, finished with 5,787 points and finished no worse than 17th out of 38 in any of the 10 parts of the event in the young 17-18 age division.

    Wolf Mahler of Temple, Tex., was the overall winner, with 7.274 points.

  • Montgomery picks Fontbonne

    Trevor Montgomery, a 2012 Vandalia Community High School graduate, on Wednesday signed his admissions letter to Fontbonne University, where he plans to play baseball.

    He is the second player from his class to sign with an NCAA Division III school in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, joining Dathan Berning, who recently signed with Greenville College.

  • PHOTOS: Golf-Athon

    The Vandalia High School golf team took to the course on Monday for its annual Golf-Athon, a fundraiser which helps the golfers get money for their uniforms. At the end of the season, the Vandals then get to keep the polo shirts. The golf season opens on Aug. 13 at East Alton-Wood River.

    '92 Vandal football team to be honored

    Vandalia Community High School will honor its 1992 football team prior to this season's first home game on Aug. 24.

    All team members, managers and cheerleaders are invited to attend the pregame ceremony, which will be followed by Vandalia vs. Gillespie at 7 p.m.

    Vandalia Mutual Insurance agreed to sponsor the Vandalia High School baseball diamond for the next 10 years. The company's sponsorship sign was recently installed above the scoreboard in right field.
