  • Big names in VCHS Athletic HOF class of '12

    Vandalia’s last state-champion wrestler and the last wrestling team to place at state join the coach who brought

    Vandalia’s wrestling team to prominence and one of the best basketball players ever to play at the school in the 2012 athletic hall of fame class.

    Jo-E Smith, the 2007 individual state wrestling champion at 152 pounds, will be inducted as an individual, as well as with the 2007 wrestling team, which placed second in the state.

  • Lady Vandals open season with victory

    Two seniors dominated the attack and 12 service aces helped bring the Lady Vandals a season-opening conference win on Tuesday, as they defeated Staunton, 25-18, 25-19.

    Sierah Ruffner led the offense in the first set, putting down all five of her kills during the set, including three in four points during a stretch that saw Vandalia widen its lead to five points at 16-11.

  • Seniors star as Vandals defeat Gillespie, 42-14

    Ryan Ambuehl could feel the pressure from behind him as he ran through open space on the first play of Vandalia’s third first-quarter drive.

    So the senior running back kicked himself into a higher gear.

    Ambuehl threw a stiff-arm and then rumbled 69 yards for Vandalia’s second touchdown of the quarter, helping set the tone of a 42-14 season-opening win against Gillespie last Friday.

  • Football notes: Tough challenge lies ahead

    The good news is that the Vandals get to play Carlinville at home.

    The bad news is that when Carlinville comes to town, it brings along arguably the best running backs in the conference.

    Vandalia's defense will have one of its toughest challenges of the year on Friday when it tries to stop senior running backs Brendan Stewart and Cory Farneti from repeating their Week 1 performances, as the Vandals try to avenge last season's 28-21 loss in a critical South Central Conference matchup.

  • Orrell's late hit gives Warriors Ramsey Tournament title

    RAMSEY – Senior Jake Orrell stroked a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie with Brownstown for the winning runs last Friday in the championship game of the Ramsey Tournament.

    After struggling in game one of the tournament, Orrell drove in four runs in the final two games, and coach Joe Eddy is hopeful that is a sign that Orrell can help Patoka to a strong season.

  • Jones shows toughness in win vs. Greenville

    She was tired, but it was worth it.

    “I am totally exhausted,” said senior Bailey Jones as she came off of the court after winning her doubles match last Thursday to secure Vandalia’s 5-4 win against Greenville.

    Prior to her doubles match, Jones was entrenched in a battle with Greenville’s Abby Gaffner, erasing a 6-9 deficit to force a tiebreaker.

  • Vandalia golf team gets first win of season

    Senior Blake Swofford picked up his third golf medal of the season, leading the Vandals to their first team victory of the fall last Thursday.

    Playing at Vandalia Country Club against Altamont and Ramsey, the Vandals were led by Swofford’s 3-under-par 32 in winning the event by 24 strokes.

    Vandalia’s 174 was its lowest 9-hole team score of the season, and easily defeated Altamont (198) and Ramsey (203).

    Swofford bogeyed the first hole of the afternoon, but finished strong, shooting birdies on holes 6-9 to win by six strokes.

    South Central wins third NTC game

    The Cougars won their third National Trail Conference game of the season on Tuesday, defeating Dieterich, 11-1, in six innings.

    Senior Dan Diss struck 11 to earn his second victory of the season, and senior Heath Hoffmann paced the offense, with a 3-for-4 effort, including four RBI.

    South Central is 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in the NTC.
