  • IHSA changes don't affect Fayette County schools

    The Illinois High School Association made two sweeping changes to its by-laws last Thursday, but neither of them affect any Fayette County high schools.

    Because of a discrepancy in the number of schools in each of the four classes in recent years, the IHSA adjusted the enrollment figures for each class, but all seven area high schools’ enrollments leave them in the same classes as before.

    In addition, no school is close to moving up or down a class.

  • The College Report: A quartet of area athletes recently completed their college careers

    Today marks the end of The College Report for the 2010-11 school year. While their college careers are in the books, there are two players that are not done with their athletic careers. One other will continue to compete, although no longer at the college level. The fourth leaves his college as one of its most celebrated players ever.

  • Lady Vandals shut down EAWR in summer showdown

    Megan Godoyo struck out 10 and allowed just one hit, and the Lady Vandal offense took advantage of nine East Alton-Wood River errors in defeating the Lady Oilers, 10-0, in five innings last Thursday.

    In total, Vandalia players took an extra 20 bases because of defensive miscues or errant pitches from EAWR.

    Several of those bases were swiped, however, because of good awareness on the part of the players.

    “It was definitely some heads-up baserunning,” said coach Brian Buscher. “For the most part, they were heads-up and got experience to build from.”

  • Vandals complete second summer shootout

    The second summer Vandal Shootout was completed last Friday, with Breese Central, DuQuoin and Harrisburg going undefeated in pool play, and Mounds Meridian winning the tournament.

    The Vandalia High School boys basketball team was 1-5 in pool play, defeating Cumberland, and lost its first game in the tournament to Benton.

    The final two summer shootouts will be from June 20-21 and June 23-24.

  • Lady Vandals comlete first shootout

    The Vandalia High School varsity girls basketball team was undefeated at the Lady Vandal Shootout last Wednesday.

    The Lady Vandals beat Altamont, Shelbyville and Cumberland during the event. Also at the shootout, the Vandalia JV team lost to Altamont and Central A&M. The Lady Vandals will host their final shootout this summer on June 29.

    Mike Travelstead has always cared.

    The recently retired Vandalia English teacher and girls track coach cared for his “A” students just as much as he did for his average students, and he cared for his state-caliber track stars just as much as he did for the girls who just wanted to set a personal-best time, even if that meant finishing in last place.

  • Vandalia Sr. Legion team splits season opener vs. Carlyle

    There is something about teams that Luke Hohlt coaches that gets players motivated to score runs in the seventh inning.

    Many times during the high school season, the Vandalia Vandals would score in the late innings, and Vandalia's Sr. Legion team did the same during its first game of the season, a 9-7 loss to Carlyle last Wednesday.

    Post 95 trailed 9-5 entering the bottom of the seventh, but the first five batters reached base, Caleb Randle scored on a passed ball and Dathan Berning got an RBI by driving home Ian Murrell on a fielder's choice.

  • Meyer's grand slam sets tone for SC win

    A grand slam from Shawn Meyer in the first inning set the tone for South Central, as its Jr. Legion team defeated Vandalia, 10-6, after a steady barrage of base runners on Monday.

    Three of the first four Post 519 batters reached base to set up Meyer’s home run, and at least one runner would reach in five of the next six innings, with South Central scoring in four of them.

    “They are kind of a rare group,” said coach Curt Jones. “They have a lot of fun, but are also serious about this thing.”

  • Boys basketball teams open summer season

    Vandalia and Brownstown High Schools opened their summer boys basketball seasons at the Vandal Shootout.
    Both teams played four games on Monday, with each earning one win.

    In Vandalia's first game against Carlyle, it held an early lead, but a barrage of 3-pointers from the Indians in the second half propelled them ahead. They would win, 52-42.

    Vandalia would fall in the second game, losing to Columbia, 46-27.

    In the afternoon, the Vandals would lose a lopsided game to Trico, and defeat Flora, which was not playing with stars Paul Knapp and Nick Painter.
