  • Jr. Wrestlers set for home tournament this Sunday

    The Vandalia Jr. Wrestling club will be hosting a tournament at Vandalia Community High School on Sunday at 9 a.m.

    Wrestlers age 10-and-under will begin at 9 a.m., and those between ages 11-14 will immediately follow.

    Club wrestlers participated in a pair of the tournaments this past weekend.

    Jr. Vandals get two
    wins vs. Pana St. Pats
    The Vandalia seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball teams won against Pana St. Pats on Tuesday.
    For the seventh-graders, Matt Lidy had 10 points to lead the Jr. Vandals (9-5) to a 48-31 victory.
    For the eighth-graders, Richie Well led with 15 points to lead Vandalia to a 41-33 victory.

  • The Next Level: Graduated athlete roundup (Dec. 13)

    Laura Hobbie • Senior • Greenville

    •Dec. 8 – Hobbie, a Vandalia graduate, started and played 34 minutes for Greenville in 70-69 loss to Robert Morris-Springfield. She scored a game-high 21 points on nine field goals (two 3-pointers), and was 1-for-2 from the free-throw line. She also grabbed three rebounds, had three steals and dished out two assists. Greenville is 6-3 (2-0 SLIAC) on the season.

    Patoka's Jered Cain was recently recognized for scoring his 1,000th career point for the Jr. High basketball team.

  • Two double-doubles lead Vandals to win in conference-opener

    GILLESPIE - Double-doubles from Chase Woolsey and Michael Wells plus 20 points from Tim Ritchey propelled the Vandals in a fast-paced 76-60 South Central Conference win at Gillespie on Friday.

    Woolsey had 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Wells had 16 points and 10 rebounds, in his first career double-double. Aaron Harter added 14 points.

    The Vandals pulled out to a 42-25 halftime lead, but Gillespie battled back in the third period, coming out of the break with a more physical style that alowed the Miners to get back within six points at one time.

  • Lady Vandals fall to Hillsboro

    The Lady Vandals held an early advantage, but Hillsboro’s Shelby Gray stole the show in the second half of a 58-40 loss to Hillsboro on Thursday.

    Gray had a game-high 29 points for the Lady Toppers, including all of their second-quarter points.

    The win also marked the 200th in the career of Hillsboro coach Brett Tuetken.

    Senior Amber Bruno had 13 points to lead Vandalia, and junior Morgan Cripe had a career-high 12 rebounds.

  • Wrestlers pick up first win of the season

    On Thursday, Vandalia dismantled South Central Conference opponent Hillsboro, 65-15, recording seven pins during the dual meet.

    At 285 pounds, freshman Kendrick Woolsey recorded a pin in 1:59 in his first-ever varsity match, and freshman Bobby Bradley (170) was also in his first varsity match, but he was pinned in 1:28.

    Sophomore Ryne Lipsey (113) had the fastest pin of the night, taking down Nichole Vieweg in 23 seconds.

  • Vandalia Holiday Tournamet schedule announced

    The schedule for the 2012 Vandalia Holiday Tournament has been released.

    Flora has the No. 1 seed for the 41st annual event, and Vandalia is seeded No. 3.

    Maroa-Forsyth and St. Anthony replace Wesclin and Stew-Stras in this year’s VHT.

    Other local teams are No. 5 St. Elmo and No. 10 South Central.
