School Sports

South Central Schools will be holding a sports physical clinic at South Central Middle School on Tuesday.

The exams are for athletes only and those entering kindergarten, sixth grade or ninth grade should not register to receive their health physical.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, and the physicals will be given from 9-11 a.m.

The cost is $15 and checks are payable to Salem Medical Center.

KINMUNDY – Two pitchers combined to strike out 12 Trenton hitters, and each South Central player reached base at least once during an 8-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader last Saturday.

Shawn Meyer started for Post 519 and struck out 11 before being replaced on the mound after 6 1/3 innings of work. Luke Krajefska finished out the game, inducing a fielder's choice and striking out the final batter.

Two area collegiate players were recently honored for athletic or academic achievements.

Spencer Patton, a South Central graduate and former Southern Illinois University pitcher, was named the American Baseball Coaches Association’s NCAA Division I Rawlings Gold Glove winner.

He was the only Division I pitcher given the award, and earned the honor after committing no errors in 27 chances this past season at SIU.

Patton recently began his professional career with the Idaho Falls Chukars, a rookie-league affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.

A fundraising campaign to help purchase equipment for the new all-weather track at Vandalia Community High School has been launched by boys track coach Jane Bell.

All donations are tax-deductible through the Vandalia Schools Foundation, and donors will be recognized on a board at the facility.

Donation levels on that board are: platinum ($10,000), gold ($5,000), silver ($3,000) and bronze ($1,000).
