  • Jr. Lady Eagles fall in title game

    EFFINGHAM – The St. Elmo Junior High School softball team made a comeback, but fell short in the end against St. Anthony during the regional championship game on Monday.

    The Jr. Lady Eagles erased an early 6-2 deficit, but allowed eight runs in the last two innings to give St. Anthony the 14-6 win.

    "I am very proud of the girls for the way they competed this year," said assistant coach Tom Fedrigon. "This is a very talented and hard-working group of athletes.

    "This is definitely something to build on for next year."

  • St. Elmo survives scare from Ramsey

    ST. ELMO – There was plenty of fight in the Ramsey High School volleyball team on Monday night, but there just wasn't enough time for it to beat St. Elmo.

    The Lady Rams won the first set and made a nice comeback in the second, but St. Elmo led the entire third set to win the match, 23-25, 25-19, 25-17.

    “Our middle (hitters) found a weakness in their defense and took advantage,” said St. Elmo coach Elise Asher. “(And) we found a spot in their serve-receive that we could take advantage of.”

  • Changes made to IHSA wrestling

    The Illinois High School Association Board of Directors on Monday approved a recommendation for a format change to the IHSA Individual Wrestling State Finals.

    The new format will feature 16 qualifiers in each of the 14 weight classes in each of the three school classes.

    The format will also feature consolation wrestlebacks beginning after the quarterfinal rounds, and the top six individuals in each weight class will medal.

  • Senior Spotlight: Blaine Scholes

    MULBERRY GROVE – St. Elmo senior Blaine Scholes reached base and scored three times last Wednesday during a win at Mulberry Grove, but that was nothing compared to the performance he had against Beecher City earlier this season.

    During that game, a 17-5 win for St. Elmo, the Eagles’ leadoff hitter had his first career five-hit game.

    “I was hitting the ball hard and picking out my pitch,” Scholes said. “I had a lot of confidence. It’s easier to have a 5-for-5 day at the plate when everyone is hitting well, too.”

  • Vandals come up short against Carlinville's rushing attack

    CARLINVILLE – After Carlinville scored on a 30-yard touchdown run after intercepting Vandalia junior Tim Ritchey, the Vandals looked disappointed that they were trailing 14-0 at halftime.

    The players, however, changed their attitude at halftime, and came out to manufacture an 80-yard touchdown drive to open the second half.

    Vandalia would tie the game at 21 as well, but a pair of sacks late in the fourth quarter forced the Vandals to punt and allowed Carlinville to hold the ball for the final 2:42 of the game to win, 28-21, last Friday night.

  • South Central tops Vandalia in tourney

    ALTAMONT – With coach Mary Brimberry back on the bench with her team after missing a game due to an unexpected death in the family, the South Central High School volleyball team rallied around its coach to beat Vandalia in three sets during the opening game of the Altamont Tournament.

    South Central took that match, 25-21, 22-25, 16-14, but it would not muster another win in pool play to finish seventh.

    Vandalia, meanwhile, would fall to Cumberland and beat Greenville before downing Altamont in the third-place game.
