  • St. Elmo, Patoka to play for EIC crown

    (1) St. Elmo and (2) Patoka will play for the Egyptian-Illini Conference championship on Thursday at Vandalia High School's baseball field. The game is at 7 p.m.

    (6) Mulberry Grove and (5) Beecher City both took one-run losses on Wednesday, and they will play for third-place at 4:15 p.m. The Aces lost, 9-8, to Patoka, and the Eagles lost, 10-9, to St. Elmo.

    In the consolation game on Wednesday, (3) Brownstown defeated (4) Ramsey, 13-3.

  • Senior Spotlight: Patrick Bauer

    Some 80 pounds trimmer and with the physical benefits of 11 weeks of National Guard training packed into his new frame, Vandalia senior Patrick Bauer feels like a new man.

    Weighing as much as 250 pounds during his junior soccer season, Bauer knew something needed to change, and joining the National Guard and thinking about his family history was enough motivation for him.

  • Vandals slow down Marquette, take six-point loss

    The swarming Vandalia defense is the first team this season to hold Marquette Catholic to fewer than 30 points, but with the Explorer defensive front playing just as well, the Vandals were unable to come away with a victory last Friday, falling, 15-9.

    The margin could have been greater had it not been for two defensive stops deep in Vandalia territory.

    Toward the end of the first quarter – with the Explorers leading, 7-6 – a Vandalia player went offsides to bring Marquette to the Vandal 5-yard line on second down and a yard to go.

  • Vandalia takes 3rd in own tournament

    Vandalia’s win in the third-place game of its own tournament on Saturday marked its third victory against Greenville on the early season.

    And while she wants wins, coach Allison Smith would have rather gotten that 25-8, 25-18 win against a different team.

    “Really, we wanted to be in the championship game, and we should have,” Smith said. “We didn’t play really well against Carlyle, but you have to take it as you get it.

  • Aces upset Bombers at EICs

    Pitching in front of a scout from the New York Mets, Mulberry Grove junior Kyle Bloemker had one of the finest performances of his career to give the Aces an upset win in the Egyptian-Illini Conference Tournament.

    Playing No. 3 Brownstown, the sixth-seeded Aces got 15 strikeouts from Bloemker and a two-run single from Nate Ketchem in the top of the seventh inning to win, 3-1, at Vandalia High School on Tuesday.

  • South Central takes second at Vandalia Tourney

    The South Central High School volleyball team admittedly made too many unforced mistakes in the championship game of the Vandalia Tournament on Saturday.

    Against Carlyle, those errors added up quickly, as the Lady Cougars struggled in the middle of both sets of the 23-25, 16-25 loss.

    "Overall (today), I thought we played well," said coach Mary Brimberry. "Whenever we get (to the high school gym), we haven't been able to play for championships.

  • Vandalia soccer ties CORL in first non-loss

    The Vandalia soccer team got two goals and what proved to be a key save during a 2-2 tie against Christ Our Rock Lutheran last Thursday, the team's first non-loss of the season.

    Junior Sawyer Dickenson's slow roller found its way past the Silver Stallion goalie to open the scoring early in the game, and senior Trevor Opfer put Vandalia ahead, 2-1 with a goal toward the end of the first half.

    Christ Our Rock, however, would score the equalizer during the second half while preventing the Vandals from scoring.

  • The College Report: Parrish and volleyball team visit NYC

    The Franklin College women's volleyball team traveled to Stevens Institute of Technology to play four matches this past week.

    But, the volleyball tournament was probably not the main thing the Grizzly volleyball team will remember for the rest of their lives. Before heading to Hoboken, N.J., Taylor Parrish, a Vandalia grad, and the rest of the Franklin team had a chance to visit New York City, including Ground Zero. Before the tournament, they had a chance to observe such things as the construction of a new World Trade Center.

  • Vandalia plays hard in both sets of win at Ramsey

    RAMSEY – Vandalia coach Allison Smith had been waiting for her team to quickly put away an opponent in the first set, and then do it again in the second one.

    The Lady Vandals (11-4) finally responded on Monday, downing Ramsey, 25-10, 25-9.

    Several other times this season, Vandalia had beaten an opponent by 15 or more points in the first set, but each time, the team slowed to its opponents' pace and would win the second set by 10 points or less.

    Now with the type of win Smith was seeking, she hopes it will be a sign of great things to come.

  • Rams knocked out of EIC Tourney

    The first three innings between Ramsey and Beecher City on Tuesday night were fairly competitive.

    The final two, however, saw the fifth-seeded Eagles score 10 times on their way to a 14-4 win against No. 4 Ramsey at the Egyptian-Illini Conference Tournament at Vandalia High School.

    Ramsey’s Tyler Pryor was 2-for-2, with a triple and two runs at the plate, and also started for the Rams, striking out six.

    Two of those strikeouts came with no outs and the bases loaded in the first inning.
