  • Hawkins pitching well for SIUE club team

Vandalia graduate Kyle Hawkins has been a very effective pitcher for the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville club baseball team this spring.

In his last four games, he has pitched 18 1/3 innings, striking out 28 batters.

Included in those starts were a complete game in a 7-1 win against SIU-Carbondale on Sunday, and a four-hitter against St. Louis University last Tuesday.

Against SIUC, Hawkins struck out eight, walked one and allowed just five hits to keep SIUE undefeated in conference play, at 8-0.

  • School sports briefs (April 18)

Nomination period open for VCHS Athletic Hall of Fame inductions

The nomination period is open for this year’s Vandalia Community High School Athletic Hall of Fame inductions.

Forms are available in the high school office, and should be sent to Kevin Jackson, VCHS Athletic Director, 1109 N. 8th St., Vandalia, Ill. 62471.

In order to be nominated, the following conditions must be met.

  • Home runs, defense highlight sectional win for South Central

GREENUP — Two home runs, 16 hits and stellar defense fueled an 11-3 win for South Central on Wednesday, as the Cougars took down North Clay in a sectional semifinal game.

Seniors Kyle Bray and Austin Schwarm accounted for five of those runs with home runs, and Schwarm made about as good of a catch as any high school player could make to rob a North Clay batter of what would have been a two-run double.

  • Gordon repeats as state champ

EAST PEORIA – Oh, the drama.

For anyone with a rooting interest in Curtis Gordon’s pole vault performance at Saturday’s Illinois Elementary School Association state championships, it was tough to stand still throughout the final four heights.

Battling Parkside’s Ryan Ashenbremer in 3-inch increments in the Class AA finals, the tension rose on every attempt as Gordon and Ashenbremer matched heights up to 12 feet, 9 inches.

  • Meyer is fourth at IESA state meet

EAST PEORIA – Of the three events she qualified in, eighth-grader Emma Meyer made her biggest impact at Saturday’s state meet in the pole vault.

After easily clearing the first six heights, Meyer needed all three attempts to set a new school record with 9 feet, 9 inches, and in doing so, she finished fourth at the Illinois Elementary School Association state championships.

  • Two Vandals qualify for IHSA state meet

For all of the excitement of two Vandalia boys track athletes making the state meet, there was just as much disappointment, as a senior missed qualifying by just a fraction of a second.

Senior Ryan Ambuehl qualified in two events and sophomore Ben Strobel qualified in one for this weekend’s Illinois High School Association state track championships on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

In the 800-meter run, senior Wade Cowger placed third, and his time was just six-hundreths of a second over the automatic state-qualifying time.
