    Patoka man to be inducted at SIU

    A former Patoka athlete will be inducted to the Southern Illinois University Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday.
    John Garrett is among the six inductees in the 2012 class.

    Garrett, who was a 5-foot-10, point guard nicknamed "Mouse," scored 995 points over 72 games (13.8 points per game) during his three-year career at SIU. When he played, from 1969-72, freshmen were not eligible.

  • South Central takes third place at MTC Tournament

    The South Central boys may be at a turning point in their season.

    Coming into the Midland Trail Conference Tournament as a No. 5 seed, the Cougars upset second-seeded Cisne, 43-31, to take third place on Saturday.

    South Central (6-14) got a game-high 17 points from senior Colby Bushue, who scored 10 of those points during the fourth quarter.

    In the final period, the Cougars outscored Cisne, 21-8, to secure the victory.

    Cisne had led through most of the first half, including a four-point advantage at halftime.

  • Eighth-Grade Tourney Begins

    The Vandalia Junior High eighth-grade boys basketball tournament got under way on Monday and Tuesday. The eight-team tournament will be decided on Thursday, with the championship game beginning at 7:15 p.m. at VJHS.

  • Cheer Champions

    The Brownstown High School cheerleading squad recently won the cheerleading competition at the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament.
