St. Elmo Hero wins 24th, then scratched

St. Elmo Hero, the harness racing horse named after a late St. Elmo man, earned his 24th straight win at Balmoral Park near Chicago to tie the record for most consecutive wins to start a career.

The horse was scheduled to race at the Cam Fella Stakes in Canada last weekend, but he was scratched because he is sick.

The stakes would have been the richest prize of his career had he won.
