  • Kaskaskia College offering sports camps
    KC offering girls soccer and basketball camps in June The Kaskaskia College Blue Angel soccer and basketball programs will host summer camps the week of June 18-22.   The camps are for girls entering kindergarten through sixth grades. The soccer camp will be held from 9 a.m.-noon, and the basketball camp will be held from 1-4 p.m.   Students can register for one of the camps for $60, or can register for both for $100. All participants will receive a T-shirt. It is suggested that students in both camps bring lunch.

  • VCHS to hold meeting about drug testing
    A informational meeting will be held on May 31 at Vandalia Community High School regarding the drug testing policy for those in extracurricular activities, which will go into effect for the 2012-13 school year. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the high school gym.

  • Vandalia honored for Volley for the Cure fundraising
    The American Cancer Society recently released the 12 Illinois schools that raised the most money at their Volley for the Cure volleyball games this past fall. Vandalia was ranked third, with a total donation of $6,848. Ziegler-Royalton was first in the state, with $16,500.

  • Vandalia men’s slo-pitch softball league will begin play on Monday
    The Vandalia men’s slo-pitch softball league will begin play on Monday. The five-team league will play four games on Mondays from May 21-Aug. 12 and Thursdays from July 19-Aug. 16. Wednesdays, June 27, July 11, and Aug. 1, 8 and 15 will be used as rain dates. Teams in the league are: •Buckstop Archery •Montgomery Plumbing •Keck’s Marsh •Riedle Law Office Cyclones •Copper Penny

  • Earnest reflects on Queens
    The odds were stacked against Vandalia native Josie Earnest once the seeding was finalized for last week’s United States Bowling Congress Queens Tournament. Facing Hall of Famers and collegiate All-Americans, Earnest had an uphill climb in the tournament, but she overcame almost every one of the challenges to make the television finals and place fifth.

  • YMCA holds healthy lifestyle challenge
    The Fayette County Family YMCA recently held a heathy lifestyle challenge. The challenge awarded points to members for drinking enough water, choosing healthier foods, coming to the YMCA for workouts or classes, and for weekly weigh-ins.

  • Haller honored by state Representative Tom Cross
    Fayette County resident Bill Haller was recently honored by state representative Tom Cross (R-Oswego) for a lifetime of acheivements. Haller, a former Major League Baseball umpire, was the focus of House Resolution 942, which was passed last week to honor his storied career in baseball and the military.

  • Field of Dreams committee members have brief meeting
    The Vandalia Field of Dreams committee had a brief meeting on Tuesday to discuss a few items of business. •The committee has received a grant for $3,900 to install a concrete floor in the hitting shed between the high school fields. All of the materials will be purchased with the grant money. The dirt that will be dug out of areas in the hitting shed will be moved to the area between the softball backstop and the road, where flooding occurs when it rains.

  • YMCA news (April 19)
    YMCA hosting local level of Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run competition The Fayette County Family YMCA will be hosting a local level of Major League Baseball's Pitch, Hit and Run competition for children from ages of 7 to 14. There is no charge to participate, but all children must bring a copy of their birth certificate and sign a waiver/registration form prior to the event.

  • VYO football registration is May 3-4
    Registration for Vandalia Youth Organization football will be on Thursday and Friday, May 3-4 from 3:30-6 p.m. in the Vandalia Junior High School cafeteria. Students entering grades 5-8 may register.
