CLEVELAND, Ohio – Some 20 years ago, Jim Thome purchased a Jeep from the dealership where my dad was employed as a mechanic.
To a 6-year-old, the future Cleveland Indians standout was a monster of a man, a gentle giant towering over me as he signed the back of my baseball card in Shelby, Ohio, instantly becoming my favorite player.
Last Saturday night, Thome again became a giant of a man, only this time, he was encased in bronze.
The Atwood All-Stars won two of three games against the Murray All-Stars on Monday night during the Vandalia Field of Dreams men’s slo-pitch softball All-Star Game, and Roger Craig Welding earned the regular-season championship last Wednesday.
Murray took the first All-Star Game, 5-2, while Atwood took 4-3 wins in games two and three. Game three went eight innings.
Roger Craig Welding picked up the tournament title on tie-breaking criteria after BCH Detailing won two games on Wednesday to finish with a 13-7 record.
Registration is open for a pair of youth sports programs at the Family YMCA of Fayette County.
Children in grades 2-4 may register for the flag football program at the YMCA, with games beginning in September.
The registration deadline is Aug. 19 at 5 p.m. There is no late registration.
Registration cost is $35 for members and $70 for non-members. Payment is due at the time of registration.
Included are a uniform T-shirt and a mouthpiece, which is required to be worn during all games.
Deer hunting in Fayette County has been affected by recent changes approved by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Fayette County was one of 20 counties removed from the late-winter antlerless hunting season in changes to the 2014-15 deer hunting season announced last Tuesday by IDNR Director Marc Miller. Bond and Clinton counties were also removed from the list.
Additional changes also came in the number of firearm permits available in some counties. Fayette County’s permit numbers were not affected.
The Family YMCA of Fayette County held the third annual Dee Dee Hartz Memorial 5K run/walk last Saturday, with proceeds from the race benefitting the Dee Dee Hartz Memorial Scholarship.
Kevin Childers won the 5K in 30:17, and Sheba Shimoji was the fastest in the 10K, finishing in 49:28.

The Vandalia Field of Dreams men's slo-pitch softball league will conclude its regular season on Wednesday before hosting an All-Star Game on Aug. 4 and a championship tournament on Aug. 11-12.
With two wins on Wednesday, BCH Detailing would tie Roger Craig Welding for the regular-season championship, but if Patoka Fire Dept. beats BCH in one of the two games, RCW will be the outright champion.
The Freight will once again come of out retirement this weekend to play in the Amateur Softball Association’s annual state wooden bat fast-pitch softball tournament in Casey.
Vandalia will play its first game on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Warrior Field against Teutopolis Miller Lite in the opening game of the tournament.
With a win, Vandalia would advance to play the Springfield Frannies at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Warrior Field.
