  • Vandalia softball champs inducted to HOF
    The Vandalia men's fast pitch softball teams that won Class A national championships in 2005 and 2007 will be inducted into the Illinois Amateur Softball Association's Hall of Fame in April. On April, 9, members of Vandalia Freight, along with seven individual players and four other teams from the state, will be honored at a ceremony at the Decatur Hotel and Convention Center.

  • Longtime Vandalia bowler featured by USBC
    Longtime Vandalia resident and league bowler Farrell Gruenbaum, seen below, second from the left, with teammates at the 1970 Women's International Bowling Congress tournament in Tulsa, Okla., was recently the subject of a feature article by the United States Bowling Congress. The article was published on the USBC's website, www.bowl.com. Gruenbaum bowled in leagues for more than 80 years and will celebrate her 100th birthday on Jan. 19.

  • Eastern Illinois University to hold Christmas baseball camp
    Eastern Illinois University baseball coach Jimmy Schmitz is holding a Christmas baseball camp at the EIU Lantz Fieldhouse. The camp will run from Dec. 28-30, and players may commute or stay overnight at the Worthington Inn. Schmitz is running a total skills camp for players in grades 5-12, and the cost is $225 for commuters and $275 for players who choose to stay overnight. Meals are included.     The Vandalia Jr. Wresting Club traveled to the Highland Howl Tournament last Saturday.   • Fayette County hunters take nearly 500 deer in second season
    There were 492 deer killed in Fayette County during the second firearm season and 1,907 during the 2010 season, according to totals released by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. One hundred and fifty-one fewer deer were killed in the county in the two seasons, from Nov. 19-21 and Dec. 2-5, than were killed during last year’s deer season. Statewide, 98,700 deer were killed, a decrease of 719. In the second season, 30,663 deer were killed, a decrease of 2,630 from last year.
