  • PHOTO: YMCA Challenge winner
    Jenny Lester was the grand prize winner of the YMCA's recent 31-Day Fitness Challenge. Each day, competitors were given a challenge that had to be completed, with those completing all 31 being entered into a grand prize drawing for a $30 Subway gift card.
  • VFOD slo-pitch coaches meeting is on Thursday
    The Vandalia Field of Dreams committee will hold a coaches meeting for the men’s slo-pitch league on Thursday at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Parkview Free Methodist church at 1507 W. Jefferson St. Six teams are scheduled to take part in the league, but it is hoped that eight teams will participate. Anyone interested in starting a team should attend the meeting. Registration cost for a team will be $250.
  • Locals to be inducted in ASA Hall
    Two of the top players from the Vandalia Freight men’s fast-pitch softball team will be inducted into the Illinois Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in April. Catcher/manager Rich Well and first baseman/outfielder Nick Casey are among the 12 individuals to be inducted to the Hall of Fame on April 12 at a ceremony held at the Hotel and Conference Center in Decatur. Both men were key members of the team when The Freight picked up ASA Class A national championships in 2005 and 2007.
  • Baseball clinics coming to KC
    The Kaskaskia College baseball program will host two clinics on Saturday, Jan. 18, for players in grades 5-8. The clinics will be conducted by KC coaches and players, along with former players who have been drafted and Bryan Eversgerd, the Class AAA pitching coach for the St. Louis Cardinals organization. A pitching clinic will be held from 9-10:30 a.m., and will feature former Blue Devils  Jay Voss (St. Louis Cardinals) and Nick Gardewine (Texas Rangers).   A hitting clinic will be held from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
  • PHOTO: Ameren Donates to YMCA
    The Family YMCA of Fayette County recently received a $2,000 donation from Ameren to its Strong Kids Campaign. The campaign is used to help those with financial hardships enjoy the YMCA facility and money is also used for scholarships. In 2013, the YMCA gave out $16,844 in Strong Kids scholarships, while bringing in $13,967. The campaign budget for 2014 is $15,000. Anyone wishing to donate to the fund should contact the YMCA at 283-1258. Donations are accepted all year.
  • Vandalia man finishes quest to run 13 marathons in 2013
    A local man was among the 22,094 finishers at the Honolulu Marathon in Hawaii on Dec. 8, and by crossing the finish line, he achieved quite an accomplishment. The race marked the 13th marathon Rick Myers finished during the calendar year, completing a journey that began on Jan. 20. After running 2012 miles during 2012, Myers and a few of his friends came up with the 13 marathon goal, and Myers then took it a step further to schedule a race in 13 different states to help meet his career goal of finishing in a marathon in all 50 states.
  • Youth sports programs coming soon to YMCA
    Registration is open for three upcoming youth basketball programs at the Family YMCA of Fayette County. BASKETBALL CLINIC A basketball clinic for players in grades 1-5 will be held on Thursday and Saturdays in December. Registration for clinic ends on Nov. 20, and the registration cost is $25 for members and $50 for nonmembers. All participants will receive a T-shirt. The clinic will feature two age groups, with grades 1-2 in the first group and grades 3-5 in the second group.
  • Registration deadline approaching for YMCA youth dodgeball league
    The registration deadline for the Family YMCA of Fayette County's youth dodgeball league is approaching.   Students in grades 2-8 may register for the league by Friday, Oct. 4.
  • South Central graduate Patton helps earn Class AAA national title
    South Central High School graduate Spencer Patton was included on the postseason roster for the Class AAA Omaha Storm Chasers, and he helped the team win the Pacific Coast League championship. The Kansas City Royals prospect has had a stellar season in the lower levels of the farm system, and was rewarded with a spot on the playoff roster. Last Saturday, he struggled in an outing, allowing three earned runs on three hits and a walk in one-third of an inning during a 9-0 loss to Salt  Lake.
  • Field of Dreams All-Stars go 2-2 at Metzger-Thiele
    VANDALIA – The Vandalia Field of Dreams All-Stars had a solid showing at Saturday’s Metzger-Thiele Classic, reaching the championship game of the tournament. Playing in a field with club baseball teams from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and Washington (Mo.) University in the second annual event, the VFOD All-Stars had a strong showing for a team with a mixed roster that had very little practice time.
