  • YMCA to offer exercise programs
    The YMCA will offer several fitness programs in September. Every Monday and Wednesday starting Sept. 12 from 5:30-6:30 p.m., the YMCA will offer aerobics with Lynn Ferguson. Every Tuesday starting Sept. 6, the YMCA will offer two bootcamps:  “Wild Bootcamp” from  5-6 p.m. and “Mild Bootcamp”  from 6-7 p.m, with Haron Denton On every Tuesday and Thursday starting Sept. 8, Zumba will be offered from 9-10 a.m. with Alison Durbin.   • Field of Dreams reaches agreement with Park District
    The Vandalia Field of Dreams committee and the Vandalia Park District last Thursday came to an agreement on renovating the backstop at the high school softball field, and made concrete agreements on several other issues at the park district meeting. Despite claims from the park district board that the chain-link fence backstop is “in too good of shape” to tear down, the Field of Dreams committee gained permission to remove the fencing to build a brick backstop, and the park board also gave a $3,000 contribution to the project.
  • Atwood named MVP, Buckstop champs of slo-pitch league
    Pitcher Justin Atwood was named the Most Valuable Player of the Vandalia’s men’s slo-pitch softball league after he helped Buckstop Archery to a 23-1 record and the league title. Six other Buckstop players were also awarded. The league wrapped up its regular season on Tuesday, and began a single-elimination tournament on Wednesday. The finishing order of that tourney will determine the seeding of the end-of-season double elimination tournament that begins next Tuesday.
  • YMCA flag football, soccer starts soon
    Registration for YMCA flag football and soccer is open. The YMCA is also registering for a volleyball clinic. YMCA flag football is for children in second-fourth grades, and games are played at Miller Field. The soccer league is open to children age 4-first grade, and children in grades 2-5.   • Field of Dreams and Park District reach agreement
    The Vandalia Field of Dreams committee on Thursday received permission from the Park District to tear down the backstop at the high school softball field. In addition, the Park District gave the committee $3,000 to put toward the renovation project. Other maintanence agreements and communication details were also ironed out between the organizations.   • Field of Dreams committee wants new backstop
    The Vandalia Field of Dreams committee on Thursday will search for an answer as to why the Park District will not allow the chain-link fence backstop at the Vandalia High School softball field to be replaced with brick and netting. During the Field of Dreams meeting on Tuesday, committee members discussed the positives of upgrading the backstop to match the style of the high school baseball diamond, while wondering what the real problem with doing the work is.
  • Junior Olympian Champion
    Kassidy VanUytven recently competed in the AAU Junior Olympic Games in New Orleans, earning a gold medal in tumbling. Kassidy is a member of the Triple AAA tumbing team of Vandalia. She is the daughter of Keith and Kayla VanUytven of Vandalia, and the granddaughter of Mark Lorton of Vandalia; and Cindy and Huck Scribner, and Dan and Patti VanUytven of Ramsey. She is the great-granddaughter of Faye Lorton of Ramsey; Brad Lorton of Cowden; and Donna and the late John VanUytven of Occonee.
  • SAFE Golf Tournament raises more than $10,000
    A charity golf tournament and luncheon recently raised more than $10,000 for SAFE.

    Tuesday, Aug. 2 Game 1 Ugly Koyote 4 Montgomery Plumbing 2 •Brad Portz tripled for Ugly Koyote, and Cole Rhodes doubled for Montgomery. Game 2 Ugly Koyote 14 Montgomery 7 •For Ugly Koyote, Luke Murfin tripled, and Cody Goldsboro and Jon Spicer doubled. Rhodes had a double and a triple, and Tyler Montgomery had a pair of doubles for Montgomery. Game 3 Buckstop Archery 24 Goldsmith Farms 1
  • Players with local connections play in tourney
    The Illinois Amateur Softball Association held a state wooden bat tournament at the Vandalia Freight field this past weekend. Several local players and some former Vandalia Freight players participated in the fast-pitch tourney.
