  • Several events are upcoming at the Family YMCA of Fayette County
    SUMMER LEISURE SERIES The Family YMCA of Fayette County will hold its first session of the Summer Leisure Series next week. The program is designed to introduce lesser-played sports to youth ages 10-14, and will be held for one week in each June, July and August. Among the sports to be instructed are: ultimate Frisbee, bocce ball, badminton, sand volleyball, soccer, flag football, table tennis, dodge ball and relay races/obstacle courses. Prior knowledge of the sports is not a requirement.
  • Brownstown VFW Post 9770 raffles off 10 baseballs signed by Hall of Famers
    Brownstown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9770 held its Grand Raffle on Saturday, and included were 10 baseballs autographed by Major League Baseball Hall of Famers. Winners of those balls were:
  • Kaskaskia College offering several sports camps
    SOCCER The Kaskaskia College soccer program will hold a high school boys camp next Monday and Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. The cost to attend the camp is $30, and includes a T-shirt. The camp will be instructed by KC coach Joe Basch and current KC athletes.  All players should meet at the KC soccer field on the first day, and bring a water bottle and shin guards.     Members of the Triple A tumbling team recently participated in a meet in Effingham. Individual high score for the meet went to Emily Manley and Lauren Kaiser, who both earned perfect 10s. Highest All-Around score went to Emily Manley, 41.90. The tumblers are coached by Larry and Anita Merriman, Deb Richardson and Ashley Sebright.

  • Vandalia grad inducted at Greenville College
    Donna (Lay) Collins, a Vandalia graduate, was recently inducted into the Greenville College Athletic Hall of Fame. A three-sport athlete at Greenville College, Collins earned 12 letters in her four-year career while leading her teams in volleyball, women’s basketball and softball to winning seasons every year. In volleyball, Collins earned numerous all-conference and all-district awards, and in basketball, she was the team’s leading free-throw shooter each season.

    Vandalia's Sophia Richardson recently qualified for the Pepsi state bowling tournament by finishing third in the 15U division at Bowlmor Laketown Lanes in Springfield. The tournament will take place next Wednesday at Landmark Lanes in Peoria. Also bowling at the qualifier from Vandalia Bowl were: Kennedy Fiscus, Emma Warner, Mattie Howard, Karsyn Garrison, Joey Giller, James Seely, James Taylor, Dylan Garrett, Brendon Howard and Ty Wright.
  • PHOTOS: Well, Casey inducted to state ASA Hall of Fame
    Two of the best players from the two-time national champion Vandalia Freight fast-pitch softball team were recently inducted into the Illinois Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame. Nick Casey and Rich Well gave their induction speeches at a ceremony on April 12 in Decatur. Casey holds team records in home runs (144), triples (45), walks (286) and slugging percentage (.684), playing in 567 games. He also held a 74-59 record as a pitcher, and drove home 560 runs, while scoring 481 times.
