  • YMCA offering four sports programs this summer
    The Fayette County Family YMCA is offering four youth sports programs on Wednesdays and Saturdays this July. Sports offered for children in grades K-8 are: dodgeball, kickball, flag football and sand volleyball. Registration is $20 for members and $40 for non-members, and includes a free T-shirt. For those interested in participating on individual days, the registration cost is $10 per day, but no T-shirt is included.

    There were 26 local tumblers who recently participated at a state meet in Pana, with 19 of them qualifying for this month's national event in Madison, Wis.
  • Sr. Legion squad posts another solid victory
    A towering home run from Brady Huber and a three-run seventh inning pushed the Vandalia Sr. Legion squad to victory against Aviston last Thursday. Huber, a 2012 Greenville graduate, blasted a solo home run more than 360 feet in the fourth to tie the game at two, and Post 95 used a timely hit and aggressive base running in the seventh to put away the 6-2 win. “That’s the way we want to play,” said coach Andy Rincker. “We want to be aggressive and force the issue.”
  • South Central struggles at Altamont Tourney
    ALTAMONT – South Central struggled during its season-opening Jr. Legion tournament in Altamont on Saturday, losing both games in pool play. In each of the two games, a 4-1 loss to Newton and a 12-3 loss to Altamont, Post 519 gave up the lead early on and wasn’t able to recover. Newton left the bases loaded in the first inning, but put a run on the board in the third and then took advantage of three walks, two hits and an error in the fourth to go ahead, 4-0.

    The East-Central Illinois Liberty recently placed second at the Central Illinois Rampage Memorial Day 13U Tournament at Rochester. In game one, ECI beat Jacksonville, 5-4, with Andrew Herpstreith picking up the win. In game two, ECI lost to Springfield, 6-5, with Alec Schroeder taking the loss. In game three, ECI beat Pawnee, 8-3, with Adam Miller earning the win. In the championship semifinals, ECI beat Central Illinois, 9-5, with Richie Well notching the win, and in the title game, ECI lost to the Jacksonville Lightning, 17-7, with Well taking the loss.

  • Post 95 victorious in season-opener
    Derek Harmeier showed his signature control from the mound and Post 95’s offense scattered 13 hits to secure a 4-1 win in Tuesday’s Sr. Legion season-opener. Harmeier, a 2011 South Central graduate who pitches for Kaskaskia College, threw seven innings against Carlyle, striking out six, while walking three and allowing just five hits. Three times he stranded two runners on base.
  • New dance studio opening Thursday
    A Vandalia woman will hold a grand opening and registration day for a new dance studio in town on Thursday. Kelly Emerick, who has been involved with dancing for more than a decade, will open the doors to the Vandalia Performing Arts Center on Thursday at 11 a.m., and the center’s summer schedule will run Mondays-Saturdays from June 4-July 28.
  • Mahon has allowed no earned runs in five innings with Gateway Grizzlies
    St. Elmo High School graduate Logan Mahon has pitched well in three appearances out of the bullpen for the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League. The Grizzlies are based in Sauget. Mahon pitched two innings against Joliet during an 8-4 win on May 20. He allowed two hits and a walk. Two days later, he struck out two batters in one inning of work during a 1-0 loss at Washington. He also walked one batter. Last Thursday, Mahon took the loss after pitching one inning of a 4-3 loss to Washington.
