  • YMCA basketball programs open for registration
    The Family YMCA of Fayette County is gearing up for basketball season with several upcoming programs. Online information and registration forms are available at: http://fayetteymca.com/wp/?p=2560. *** A basketball clinic for children in grades 1-5 will be offered on Thursdays and Saturdays from Nov. 29-Dec. 15.
  • Rotary raises most money at YMCA event
    Four organizations raised more than $1,000 in the Family YMCA of Fayette County’s Free-Throw-Athon at the end of October. The Vandalia Rotary Club raised the most money, with $1,476. Money was raised by individuals on each team receiving pledges for each of the 100 free throws they attempted. Others which broke the $1,000 threshold were the Dee Dee Hartz Memorial ($1,447), Hillsboro Jr. High basketball ($1,137) and YMCA Fitness ($1,009).

    Vandalia graduate Kyle Hawkins and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville were the champions of the Metzger-Thiele Classic at Vandalia Mutual Field on Saturday. Hawkins was unable to play due to injury. SIUE defeated St. Louis University, 15-3, and Washington University, 7-4. In the tournament's opening game, St. Louis won, 5-2, against Washington.
  • Pro ballplayers offering pitching lessons
    St. Elmo graduate Logan Mahon and Shelbyville graduate Jason Sullivan, who are both professional pitchers, will offer pitching lessons during the winter. A 30-minute session for any pitcher in grades 5-12 will cost $30. For more information, contact Mahon at 267-1244, or Sullivan at 217-273-3160.
  • College tourney coming to Vandalia
    A college club baseball tournament named in memory of two local individuals will take place at Vandalia Mutual Field at Vandalia Community High School on Sunday, Oct. 28. The Metzger-Thiele Classic, named in honor of Fred Metzger and Brenda Thiele, will be a three- or four-team tournament, featuring college club teams from the region. Vandalia graduate Kyle Hawkins will be pitching for for Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville during the tournament, which will begin at 9 a.m.

  • YMCA is free to everyone this weekend
    The Family YMCA of Fayette County will be open for free to non-members from Friday- Monday during Autumn Family Fun Days. In addition to free access to the facility, the YMCA will be offering hour-long training sessions for children and adults. The sessions are open to members and non-members. Any child who participates in  all of the activities will be entered into a drawing for a $75 gift card to Wal-Mart and a three-month long family membership to the YMCA.     5K run to be part of Grand Levee The National Road Interpretive Center is holding a 5K run as part of Vandalia’s Grand Levee on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 9 a.m. Registration on the day of the run is $25 and opens at 8 a.m. The race begins in Ruemmelin Park, and the top five males and females will each receive an award. Proceeds from the race will benefit the National Road Interpretive Center, by providing money to help with the maintenance of the center’s exhibits.   • YMCA hosting Parents' Night Out on Friday night
    The Family YMCA of Fayette County is hosting Parents' Night Out on Friday. The fun-filled evening for kids ages 5-12 offers parents a night to themselves and a night of fun for their children. There will be an open gym, games, face-painting, movies and a concession stand at the event, which begins at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 10:30 p.m. Registration opens at 5:15 p.m. and the cost is $10 per child, and $5 for any siblings.
  • Two Guys & Two Gals golf tourney coming to St. Elmo
    The St. Elmo Golf Club is hosting its Two Guys & Two Gals tournament this Saturday and Sunday. The four-person scramble will have shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. each day. Limited space is still available. The entry fee is $200 per team and includes green fees, Saturday lunch and a free practice round.
