  • PHOTOS: First Annual St. Elmo Kickball Tournament
    The St. Elmo Tourism Committee held its first annual kickball tournament in Deken Park on Saturday morning, with three teams competing.

    Vandalia resident Kassidy VanUytven, 8, recently won a gold medal in tumbling at the AAU Jr. Olympics in Houston, Texas. She is the daughter of Keith and Kayla VanUytven.
  • Leiken wins SIGA player's title
    Rising Vandalia senior RaeChelle Leiken won the player's championship and the points championship on the Southern Illinois Golf Association's Jr. Tour. With a 72, Leiken won the SIGA JGT Vogler Ford-Linoln-Mazda Player's Championship by seven strokes in the 16-18-year-old girls division at Franklin County Country Club on Monday. It was Leiken's 10th victory of the summer in 12 events, giving her a wide margin in the points championship, which she won, 160.25-139.
  • PHOTOS: Cardinals Motorcycle Powers Through Town
    Hobi Timmons of Germantown and his award-winning customized St. Louis Cardinals Harley Davidson motorcycle made a stop in Vandalia last Thursday, when Timmons was visiting the Krueger family. Timmons' motorcycle has twice been driven on the field at Busch Stadium and has placed in motorcycle shows in several states. The bike includes hand-painted details, such as a photo of Busch Stadium and baseball cards of 13 Cardinal legends, and a seat modeled after a baseball glove.

    The Family YMCA of Fayette County held the Dee Dee Hartz Memorial 5K run on Saturday morning, with all of the proceeds benefitting the DeeDee Hartz Memorial Scholarship.
  • Post 95's season ends in division tourney
    After being thrown into the mix against the toughest Jr. Legion teams in the region, it wasn’t a huge shock that Vandalia lost both of its games in the division tournament, but an upset win or two wouldn’t have been that surprising either. Granted an automatic berth to the tournament because it was hosted in Vandalia, Post 95 had trouble finding an offensive rhythm, falling to Belleville, 11-1, on Saturday and to Altamont, 8-3, on Sunday.
  • The Freight takes 3rd in state tourney
    The Freight of Vandalia came out of retirement and showed little rust in placing third at the Illinois Amateur Softball Association wooden bat state fast-pitch softball tournament this past weekend. Vandalia opened the tournament, which was held in Casey, last Friday night, with a loss to eventual runners-up, the Belleville Stallions. But from there, the Freight went on a streak none of them likely imagined. In the first game on Saturday morning, Vandalia beat Altamont, advancing to a game at 3 p.m.
  • Registration open for fall sports at the YMCA
    The Family YMCA of Fayette County has opened registration for several fall youth sports. Flag football Children in grades 2-4 may sign up for the YMCA's flag football program, with the first games to be played on or after Sept. 13.
